Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Not buying the leaky valve stem seals IMO. I still believe its the shitty oil separator and I still believe that the catch can will solve the issue.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

I fully agree that a catch can could help eliminate smoke. My catch can is nearly full after 4000 K. I have to empty two times between oil changes. The contents looks like about 90% pure oil. WK2 Hemi w/ 28000K

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

FWIW, I had the same issue on my 5.3L Tahoe and a catch can solved the issue. I occasionally get blue smoke out of the exhaust at start-up and have 2500 miles. I am planning on waiting a bit longer to see if it exists after 5000 miles and if I am still getting smoke, I will add a catch can.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Is this "catch can" a aftermarket thing or is it an mopar part that can be added? Where is it installed? Any pics of an installation?

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Well I just pick up my wK2 hemi with 6000 miles and the dealer said that they don't know what the problem is, it seems like they don't even care to resolve the issue at all.

I asked about the catch can and nobody knows what that is.

At least they said that they where going to tell a Chrysler representative about the issue.

This is my first chrysler product and most likely the last.

Old Toyota's from the 90's with their 5SFE engine used to do this once they hit 100,000 miles.

Its not going to hurt anything and you dealer likely won't do anything for you. You can switch to a high mileage oil to swell up the seals and stop it, but its lame such a new car has this happening already. Sounds like a design flaw in the HEMI.

I'm interested in a Penstar V6, does it too have leaky valve stem seals?
Agreed! Valve Guide sealing is the problem here. Nothing else will cause the exact symptoms the OP has provided. This has also been an issue on GM small block V8's, although replacing the Umbrella Style Valve Guide Seals with Posi-Loc Seals pretty much eliminates the concern on those engines. There was even a TSB from GM in the late 80's or early 90's regarding this on 4.3L V6, 5.0L and 5.7L V8's. All this said, other than the annoyance, this really isn't something that will impact the life of the engine. Taken to the extreme, over a very long time, and more than at least 100,000+ miles it might (and I emphasize might) shorten the life of the Catalytic Converter.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

I disagree on it being a valve stem seal and nothing else. I know this is a few months old thread, but I just saw my first blue smoke plume at startup...I'm no engine expert, but I had a truck (GM 5.0L) with leaking valve stems seals, and a K75 BMW motorcycle that is a sideways flat 3 engine... I say this because it also would put out blue smoke at startup when it sat on its kickstand for a while, never used oil, ran like a new engine at 65,000 miles. It was known to allow a bit of oil past the rings into the chamber on its kickstand as the engine was on its side... Anything that lets oil into the chamber will cause this. What it is on this Jeep not sure, but I'm pretty sure all our new seals are OK... I drove that GM for 75,000 miles using 1qt/1000 miles and the engine did fine. But these Jeeps don't seem to be using oil.

I wouldn't make too much of this issue, if it is an issue. It is not causing engine failures, right? Cars run fine, right? This does not seem to be a "reliability" issue. Don't you put some oil in the spark plug hole to lubricate the cylinder on your snowblower every fall??? OK, not in florida.. I don't think this is necessarily causing any damage at all, but I would like to know the actual cause. I'm sure Jeep (chrysler) knows.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Just an update. I installed a catch can and the smoke problem did not go away. 6000 miles on the engine and the catch can is collecting an oil goo that has a slight milky brown color. The smoke only happens at start up when the front of the JGC is on an incline with the front up. It does not smoke on start up when the JGC is level. Dealer claims they can't duplicate the problem. I guess its time for a video. I have the HEMI but apparently its happening with the V6 also???????
