Sorry I didn't see that.

If it were my vehicle i would start pulling spark plugs to see if it were 1 cylinder that was the issue, but I can understand that you would expect the dealer to do that since it is under warranty.

Just thinking out loud i wonder if the issue is somehow related to the mds.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Is this issue limited to the Hemi engine only??

There are a few You-tube videos of this but I cannot tell if they have the HEMI or the V6 (I cannot see if they have dual exhaust).

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

I've had this problem with my JGC Limited HEMI since I bought it in May of 11'. Happened at 2K while idling on a hill for 10 minutes. I assumed a break in sort of thing. At 8K it started happening when I remote started it. Most times it was on an incline, rear down, nose up. Dealer did first oil change, problem still existed afterwards. I now have 31K on the ODO, and problem still exists, frequently. TWO dealers have not been able to reproduce the problem. Jeep DM and RM Svc manager's have been involved and Jeep has NOT authorized the dealer to break into the engine or seals until the problem is visually replicated at the dealership. This is DESPITE the fact that I have it on video.

I have been in a loaner car for the last 40 days while the dealer has had it. They are now refusing to keep it any longer without the problem happening.

Im going to the dealer on Sat to either pick it up, replace with a SRT, or sell it to Carmax and take the depreciation loss and move on from the Jeep. Its shame, as I loved my 05, and the 11...but I don't want a problem when I hit 100K (which will be by the middle of next year)

Video shows blue smoke...this one happened to be light. Sometimes it was much heavier.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

I was able to reproduce the problem at the dealer and even then they wouldnt touch my engine.

Chrysler has very mediocre service.

rpoverland: If in Houston, what dealer? I would prefer to buy from a dealer with better service.

This is exactly why I didn't buy the Chrysler extended warranty.

Took home a new JGC Overland. Lets hope this problem doesn't persist with 2012's... (I have only found people with '11s have experienced it.)

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

Good idea about the camcorder. My WK2 5.7L was doing the same thing after about 2000 miles. I thought it was from the thin break-in oil. The dealer said that break-in oil is not used anymore. Of course I could not reproduce the problem at the dealership. I also noticed that I needed a quart of oil after about 1500 miles. It still uses about a quart in 1500 miles even after I changed oil to Mobil1. The last time I saw blue smoke at startup was with my 69 Hemi Roadrunner from worn valve guides - new bronze inserts solved the problem

The 2012's do it. My does as some others. I'm going to pull the plugs and see if its just in certain cylinders. This would indicate valve seals or rings.

Re: Major smoke out of exhaust

why are you trouble shooting a brand new $45K automobile with a 100k power train warranty????? If you screw something up, it becomes a get out of free card for the dealer. Take it to them and let them do their magic - if not happy keep taking it in or go to a different dealer....
