Michelin tires dry rot?

I just noticed that all 4 of my Michelin tires seem to have developed small cracks along the side wall around the rims. If I had to guess it looks like they are starting to dry rot? These are the factory Michelin Latitude tires. They have been in service for 30 months / 20,000 miles. Is anyone else experiencing this? Is this normal? Should I be concerned?

I have seen lots of tires weather crack like that over time, but never in such a short amount of time. Generally I have seen it happen after 7-10 years, not 2-3. That said, OEM tires are always a lesser tire than what you can go out and buy. Perhaps these Michelin's are known for this?

I've still got the original OEM Michelin Pilots on my Honda Accord. 34K miles, 8 years old and the car is parked unused and unmoved in the garage 6 months out of the year. No weather cracking yet that I can see and I've been watching for it.

Re: Michelin tires dry rot?

Ive been through two sets on 97 JGC and each developed this cracking. I bought them at Costco. They gave me a picture issued by Michelin to compare the progression of the cracking to when they would do something about it. Ive heard Michelin has to cut back in quality to achieve the pricing demands of certain retailers and auto manufacturers.

Re: Michelin tires dry rot?

All tyres are produced with a serial Tyre Identification Number (or serial TIN) that shows the date of manufacture of a tyre. The last three digits (for tyres made pre 2000) or four digits (for post 2000 tyres) of the serial TIN indicate the week and year that the tyre was made.

Here is an article regarding tire aging.

If it was me, I wouldn't be concerned at all. How much tread is left on them? Maybe even give Michelin a call or email, try to get a new set!! You never know, you just may catch the right person on the other end, who is willing to go the whole way and get you new tires. =)

I have plenty of tread left on tires. Rotated every 5000 miles, always proper tire pressure, all documented at Jeep dealership. I called Michelin and put in a claim. Just so happens I am going to dealership tomorrow to have the rear door handle replaced under warranty so I'll have them inspect tires also. If they feel they need to be replaced they'll contact Michelin with my claim # and proceed from there.

I experienced similar but at the outer edge, as if the tread was about to peel off. Tires were 4 years old at the time if I am not mistaken and had about 25-30,000 miles on them

I went to Sears Auto Center (they are authorized Michelin dealer), they called Michelin and Michelin authorized them to sell me 4 new tires at 50% discount. I thought this was a fair offer considering warranty period was approaching the end (it is 5 years I think)

Just checked again to make sure 6 years warranty on these tires. I didn't think I would have to deal with tire issues so soon especially when there is still a lot of tread wear left. Hopefully I can trust there judgement. I just don't want a blow out at 70 mph at 1:00am with a vehicle full of band equipment.
