MIL PO441 - Part replaced 3 times... its gotta be something else

Hey Guys,

So Im a loyal Grand Cherokee owner... recently traded in my 2005 WK for a 2012 WK2 Overland... what a nice Jeep!

When I bought the car (used), I got a carfax with it... the last owner (1 owner) bought it and serviced it regularly at the same dealer, every oil change and inspection was listed. There we no issues, other than a single part being replaced 3 different times in a year called the "evaporative emissions vent purge valve" (dealer wording).

So... I just got a MIL the other day and the code read, PO441 (thanks autozone)... which seems to be linked to the same issue. I am not so inclined to bring it back to the dealer because they replaced a part 3 times and still the same issue. Yes, there is a warranty though.

Any thoughts? Has this code come up before on this model? Could this really just be a bad gas cap?

Thanks,

Re: MIL PO441 - Part replaced 3 times... its gotta be something else

This is one of those joyous "easter egg" hunt codes. Use the warranty to have them find the leak. Here's a backgrounder on the code...

P0441 Jeep - EVAP Purge System Performance

Possible causes
- EVAP purge solenoid vacuum supply
- EVAP purge hose/tube obstruction
- EVAP purge solenoid vacuum supply-evap system leak
- Faulty Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

Tech notes
The P0441 code means that the control module has detected a leak in the Evaporative Emission (EVAP). Loose fuel tank filler cap is the most common cause that triggers the P0441 code.

When is the code detected?
Pressure in charcoal canister and fuel tank does not drop during purge control (2 trip detection logic)
Possible symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Possible a noticeable fuel odor caused by the release of fuel vapors

P0441 Jeep Description
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) tests the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system for the following conditions:

- Large and small leaks

- Excess vacuum

- Purge flow during non-commanded conditions

- Fuel Level and Fuel Pressure sensor faults

- EVAP Purge and Vent Valve faults

The PCM monitors the Fuel Tank Pressure sensor in order to determine the level of vacuum/pressure in the EVAP system. The PCM commands both the EVAP Purge Solenoid and the EVAP Vent Valve ON when the conditions are met in order to apply an engine vacuum to the EVAP system. The PCM commands the EVAP Purge Solenoid OFF once the system has reached a predetermined level of vacuum. This test verifies if a vacuum can be achieved in the EVAP system. Failure to develop a vacuum may be caused by a large leak or a restriction.
