Missing cover over oil filter

I noticed today after my first oil change that I am missing a cover/plate that protects the oil filter and drain. Is there suppose to be a cover that protects that? I looked and it seems like their should be one but I don't see any way to bolt or secure one to the underside. I have the OR-II so I would think that would be protected also. I am thinking they forgot to put it back on after the oil change.

Wherever you had your oil changed: they forgot to put that "protective door" back on.

_OR_

The vehicle made it out of the plant with out this little cover... either way you should go get this part - as it was put there for a reason (sorry - I'm an engineer) and should not be MIA (it just looks funky). I would limit my passes through the 2-track woods trails while this protective door is not there.

No worries though -- they forgot the door on mine as well on the last oil change a few days ago at the D-ship. I will go get it, and put it back on myself if it will be faster.

...I stand corrected...

it does totally look like there is supposed to be a door there. I guess that is why I got the response that I did when I asked about it...

I just guessing here but I'm going to say that it is a filler plate for the v6 more than a cover for the oil filter. I'm only saying this because it looks as if the oil filter on the v6 is not where it is on the v8. please correct me if I'm wrong. Either way I would like to have it.

The oil filter cartridge (yuck) on the V6 is on the top of the engine. But I believe you still need to remove that bottom cover to get at the drain plug.

I looked at the cover again from above and below and can see no fasteners.

There are tabs along the right edge of the cover which grip the bottom side of the opening, and the left side has what looks like a lifting tab on the top side. Both of these show on my previous photos above.

The best I can figure is that the cover is a tight press fit. But with subzero temperatures here, I am not about to pry on it and break it (both the cover and lower shroud it fits into are plastic. They are not skid plates, but are intended to smooth out the underbody airflow for lower drag.

Also, the cover is difficult to reach from above (you would need four foot long arms to press it down), so maybe that is why Jeep dropped it from some later models.

Added: On further reflection, it would make more sense if the cover is a press fit from below. It seems that would still work with the tabs I can see.

Has anyone else had the cover off?

Hello,

Not sure if that helps, but there are several different Belly Pans available, maybe one with the opening. On the photos for me it looks like there is no cover, it's just closed.

Anyway, those would be the #(but I haven't checked what the difference is);
68091772AA BELLY PAN. Front. . [ERB]. $38.70 (ERB=3.6)
68037063AD BELLY PAN. Front. . [EX0], [EXF]. $111.00 (EXF=3.0 Diesel)
55079191AD BELLY PAN. Front. . [EZH]. $41.00 (EZH=5.7)

While I don't like this opening, it's just a dirt collector, I probably bolt a plastic piece in. Definitly cheaper than 38 bucks. As nobody sees it, easy fix ;-).

I think those part numbers are for the belly pan which doesn't include the cover.

My dealership ordered the belly pan that has the "cover". I looked at it the other day and it has the cover but after looking at it, it doesn't look like it opens in any way.. I'm getting it put on in a couple of days. Ill post the part number so you can get the right one if you so choose.

The factory filter is rediculously tight!! I had to get one of the mechanical metal removal tools, that have three metal arms that clamp as you turn the wratchet. Also mind the filter gasket, it did not come off with the filter and would let the new oil blow right out if you didn't notice and installed the new one.

The part number for the belly pan that is covered is: 68091772AA. This is NOT for the V8's according to the tech. The V8's need that access area to be able to reach some of the engine. (I didn't ask for what, sorry.)

As I stated before, what looks like a "door/access cover" that would latch is actually molded into the pan and does not open or move.

He wasn't sure why some V6's have the open access area and why some don't.

Thanks. I have a feeling that part number is for that entire front belly pan because it also fits all 2012's GC's.

Did you ever figure this out? I always take mine (2012 5.7L Hemi) in to have the oil changed. I recently changed the oil pressure sensor and noticed the same thing. No cover and assumed they forgot to put it back on. The shop I go to claimed it wasn't there in the first place. I kind of figured they were BSing me. I live in Wisconsin, so I feel a cover would be a mighty beneficial.
