Mixed answers about coolant

I have a 2014 Grand Cherokee Laredo V6 with roughly 46k miles on it. I've noticed that my engine coolant is running borderline low and I wanted to top it off. The coolant that came with I purchased the vehicle used from a dealer is an orange-redish color. I've looked around and I'm not exactly sure which coolant I am supposed to get and if I have to get the system flushed.

Re: Mixed answers about coolant

I would use the Mopar brand listed in your owners manual under the maintenance schedule.

Thank you and I would still need a full coolant flush correct?

If the fluid is just low and you're topping it off you wouldn't need to flush the system...as long as the coolant you're adding is the same as what's in there.

Re: Mixed answers about coolant

Mine went low after about 12K miles.. I asked the dealer to check why and they said nothing found and topped it up. Went low again with no obvious reason, so I bought a gallon of premix Mopar correct fluid on my own and keep it full. It isn't down much... maybe an inch on the reservoir every year. Not enough to let them tear into something and make something worse... same thing with the low Power steering fluid..!
Not great but not the end of the world....

Re: Mixed answers about coolant

For your 2014 MY GC just add this 68163849AB to top off your overflow tank. This is the 50/50 premix so no water adding necessary. It is good for 150k miles/ 10 years so no need to flush unless contaminated or you have some concern about it. Also don't get wrapped around trying to decipher the various color shades of pink/purple/orange it will drive you crazy. For 2013+ GC 68163849AB is the correct 50/50 premix. or if you don't want premix 68163848AB is correct for full strength and mix it yourself.

Its a little pricey but id stick with the OEM

Re: Mixed answers about coolant

The reason I asked about flushing it is because you can't add two different fluids together right? If I added the purple Mopar to what is currently in there that would be a bad idea correct? By topping it off I mean the reservoir is currently borderline low and is near the "add" line.

Re: Mixed answers about coolant

Correct you don't mix OAT (MY2013+) with HOAT(the old stuff up to MY2012). they created a disaster with all these colors. to confuse it more purple OAT that comes in the jug can have different hue than the factory fill OAT that can appear more of a red orange. which can appear even more orange distorted by the recovery tank. when I look at my recover tank on my 2014 I bought new it looks orange if I put a sample on white paper it looks more pink however it is OAT and the correct 50/50 premix is OAT 68163849AB which looks more purple from the jug. To confuse it more the TSB will show OAT as bright purple even though the factory fill OAT can be more pink. confused yet lol

It is certainly possible that someone changed your 150k/10 year fluid for whatever reason at 40k and went backwards and put HOAT in it but likely you are just seeing the confusion created by the colors like many of us looking at the recover tank. But if you are uncomfortable with it as it was used certainly have it changed. There are several threads that will talk all this to death on this forum and others. Believe me I looked at this closely before I dumped what appeared to be purple fluid into my recover tank that appeared more orange didn't seem right but it was.

Re: Mixed answers about coolant

Lol now I am confused again but I may have a solution. When I opened up the reservoir cap this is the color of fluid that I saw. In some instances when looking at the reservoir from the outside with different lighting the color looks different. Is this the correct color?

Re: Mixed answers about coolant

Mine looks orange in the tank but purple in the bottle... Buy the Mopar 50-50 mix that is correct for you, dump it in and don't look back. A Gal will last you as long as you have the vehicle. Not worth looking into or fixing......That's what I did....

Re: Mixed answers about coolant

my '14 has "purple" coolant that looks "pink" in the reservoir.

They really blew it with their choice of dyes.
