My rear view mirror just fell off! Help!

I was adjusting my rear view mirror in my WK2 SRT and it just popped off and I can't get it back on.

It looks like the six sided 'bolt' is glued to the windshield and the three prong thing clamps to it. I've tried to push it back on but to looks like it needs a lot of pressure to force it back on I just don't want to push it through the glass.

Anybody have any suggestions? Dealer service doesn't open until Monday morning.

Here's the three prong clamp that fits to the bolt.

Re: My rear view mirror just fell off! Help!

From what I've experienced with these sorts of clip mechanisms, you need to bring two of the prongs up to two faces of the bolt... ie: the mirror tilted at probably 30 degrees to it's final alignment.

Once you have the two points of contact made, you apply a "shear" force to compress the two prongs, as you roll the mirror assembly down to connect the third prong with the bolt.

I've rewritten this twice and it's still not real easy to digest, but it's the best I can do mate.

Cheers,
Steve

My rear view mirror just fell off! Help!

Thanks Barboots. Very clear. I've tried it with one clip then two clips but it just won't budge. I don't want to risk it being glass and all. I'll just take it the dealer next week.

I ended up disconnecting the electrical plugs and removing the entire mirror. I'll just drive around for a while without it.

I'll fit in quite well as most Sydney drivers have no idea what a rear view mirror is used for anyway.

I hear you. I'm finding many drivers are not interested in the mundane traffic matters distracting them from their important SMS, Farcebook, Instaspam activities anyway.

Re: My rear view mirror just fell off! Help!

Ding ding ding ding....and the winner is Nicjak! Turns out a bit of finesse does the trick. Thanks everybody for your help!!!

I originally tried this but the high beam sensor module was in the way and I was too lazy to remove it and didn't want to risk further issues.

Not too impressed by how easily that mirror came off though.

They can be a real bitch to get back on, no? I had my mirror off to install the Blendmount (radar detector mount) and even with directions & pictures it took a few tries. Not easy . . .

Yes Hemi, it is! Of course it's Easter with no shops open and I have a family dinner to go to & don't want to show up with my rear view mirror swing back and forth like George of the Jungle. So is it like a twisting motion to pop the three prongs back onto that 6-sided bolt or pressure? I feel like i'm on the verge of snapping the damn thing trying to use sheer force alone. Thank you for responding so quick!

It's not easy because it has to be lined up perfectly . . .

The stub for the mirror mount itself mates to what's essentially a hex-bolt head glued to the windshield. The arm has a hex socket with 3 fingers in it. Careful examination of the "bolt head" revealed ridges on three of the edges. To re-install the mirror, turn the arm 1/6th of a turn, push firmly onto the bolt and then twist into position. Good luck!
