New a/c condenser and Radiator

While driving my 2013 JGC Ltd. 3.6 two weeks ago down in Florida, the a/c started to make a hissing noise. A few miles down the road the cooling turned warm. THAT WAS IT. When I got home to Virginia I took it to my Chrysler/Jeep dealer and they told me the condenser had a hole in it and the refrigerent leaked out. They said it probably was a rock while on the Hwy.that did the damage. Made sense to me. They ordered the condenser and I dropped it off. A few hours later I got a call from them telling me that the radiator also had a leak and it needed to be replaced. Because I was on a trip from Virginia 3000 total miles, I was under the hood before the trip many times going over everything, looking for leaks, checking fluid levels, also had an oil change before I left by that dealer, no one saw a radiator leak. I certainly did not. When I got home the car sat in my garage for two days with no fluid leaks on the garage floor. I have a Mopar Chrysler Bumper to bumper warranty. Everything was covered. No costs were on the invoice, just said covered by the warranty. There is in fact a new condenser and radiator and the job seems to be well done. I wonder what the cost might have been, (they don't seem to want to let that info out to the customer). Any comments would be appreciated. I certainly can't complain for I have these two units replaced, the refrigerant is new, pressure tested and up to top cooling and ready for the summer months to come, (if they ever do),LOL... looks like new anti-freeze in the reservoir, etc. So I'm not complaining. But that Radiator puzzles me. No indication of leaks while driving and the coolent level was exactly where it should have been when I got home from the trip. Might their be something I don't know about radiators that might have a leak that does not show? Once again, comments please. Thanks Guys.

Re: New a/c condenser and Radiator

My radiator was replaced just last month on my 2014 Overland under warranty...I was told it was leaking from a seam on one of the end tanks. No sign of damage, no leak marks on the driveway, temp gauge looked normal, and the level in the expansion tank looked good. I just happen to see some steam rising up from the hood one cold night.

Check the dealerships work real close because when I opened my hood a couple days after to add some windshield washer, I noticed antifreeze all over the engine compartment, both bands on the intake tube were completely loose, and the cooling fan shroud was completly disconnected on the drivers side. I compained about the crappy work to the service manager, and I was given a free inside/outside detail this Spring.

What was your build date? I just noticed steam coming from one end of my radiator this AM. It is -21 below so it showed up easily. Been smelling antifreeze for months yet dealer did not see any issues. First time I noticed the steam coming out. Pretty obvious today.

Re: New a/c condenser and Radiator

My build date was July 2012. Now that you mention steam coming from the front, I do remember seeing steam thinking it was the wind blowing the exhaust from the back to the front. That did happen a handful of times so that might have been what I was seeing, my own radiator steam. AND I did smell radiator fluid a few times but I just figured "hey,it can't be from a vehicle that had a cost of well over $40m dollars"!!!! GCLimited, thanks for the tip on checking the workmanship. Its been almost a week now and several checks under the hood and 300 miles and all is dry and solid. LoveMyFirstJeep. When I entered this thread I did say "Thanks Guys", but now saying "Thanks guys and Gals". I have 5 beautiful Daughters ranging in age from 35 to 46 so I am a Dad full of pride for every single one. Some are stay at home Mom's, some are career girls, and some can take care of their SUV's as good as Dad if not better.

My build date was June 2013... So probably not the same batch of radiators.

And no worries, "Thanks guys" covers the gals fine. I would bet most on this forum are males so you were just addressing the majority. : )

Well well well.... Today I am getting a new radiator too. Like yours - no leaks on the driveway. So my nose picked it up when it started two years ago (well before my first post about it). Was in for an oil change/rotation and they found it on inspection. Antifreeze was down enough they could notice but he said still was not down very much.

Will ask the dealer when I pick it up where exactly it was leaking. And I will have my hubbie look in the engine bay to make sure everything is hooked back up.

Got a "cool" 2016 Jeep Compass as a loaner from Enterprise. You can tell you get what you pay for... What a difference from my Overland. Okay but rides rough, sound/speakers are horrible, engine is noisy, bare minimum creature comforts. Goes down the road good though and accelerates okay albeit noisy. Better than walking!

I will post back when I find out where it was leaking.

Edit: service advisor told me it was leaking on the lower corner on the driver's side. Didn't ever make it to the garage floor because the "tray" was catching it and just evaporating off, so the leak was not very big.

Re: New a/c condenser and Radiator

I'm glad I saw this. I've been having some steam from time to time roll out the front of my 2013. Thought it was condensation from cold mornings. I've already had to fill up my coolant once already. I'm guessing it's a small leak. I'm also having power steering fluid a small leak from my power steering as well. Guess the dealer will be able to add to check the radiator to the list on Monday. Glad I got the extended warranty!

Yeah, after driving 25 miles in the cold and STILL seeing steam from the radiator on a sub-zero day last Winter, I knew it was leaking.
Told them to look and of course they found nothing then. So nice to walk around my ride and not smell antifreeze every day now.
