No hot air blowing from the vents around the radio

I have Laredo X that has automatic climate control, so in that respect it should be the same as Ltd or Overland.

It was about 42 F outside today. Temperature on climate control was set to 73 and it was in "Auto" mode. There was no air at all blowing from vents to the left and to the right of the radio. Also airflow from vents near front doors was not that strong (but noticeable). When I increased temperature on climate control to the max (when it says "High" or smth like that) there was still no air blowing from vents around the radio.

When I reduced temperature so that cold air started blowing air started coming from the vents around the radio. As soon as I increased temperature it stopped blowing again from these vents.

Is this by design?

PS I also tried all modes other than "Auto" and it seems to be vents around radio are for "cold A/C only"

Re: No hot air blowing from the vents around the radio

Did you try manually directing the air to the face? Auto mode vary by manufactures, they may decide to blow air to the floor and the side vents for defrosting for heat. I never use mine in auto mode so I haven't noticed this.

In Auto mode, heat should only come from floor vents as most cars are programed that way.

Re: No hot air blowing from the vents around the radio

FWIW when my limited's temp is increased (need hot air to make that temp) in auto mode it switches to mostly floor automatically. When I decrease the temp and it need cooler air to make that new temp it comes out of the upper vents mostly. Maybe just an automatic feature to take advantage of the hot air rises cold air drops thing.

Also, one thing I do notice that's odd is the inability to recirculate when in heat mode. If I want to block outside fumes or pollution, the only way is to turn off the entire system.

As I said, all (but one) of my present and previous cars with automatic climate control will only use floor and defrost vents with heat. That includes my previous '02 GC Overland.

Re: No hot air blowing from the vents around the radio

Oh no they shouldn't be for cold only. Mine will blow out heat, there may be a blender door issue with yours if you can't get any heat out of them in any mode.

What mode your climate control is in when you get a heat out of them?

Re: No hot air blowing from the vents around the radio

I have mine in manual mode face only and heat blows out of those vents. It would make sense that cool air would blow out of those when in auto mode. In the mid 70's in auto mode it would probably simulate a bi-level mode. In bi-level mode normally heat blows from the bottom and cool air from the top vents. This gives a good balance so heat isn't blowing right in the face. If you turn up the temp in auto mode it should mover all air to the floor vents.

If you can't get heat at all out of those vents in manual mode then I would bet it is a blender door problem.

Re: No hot air blowing from the vents around the radio

To answer my own question: hot air does blow from the vents around the radio. You just need to press "Mode Control" button on the AC (it is to the right if "Recirc") a couple times until you select correct mode.
