Odd automatic lift gate behavior

Who else has had their liftgate freak out and re-open if, after hitting the liftgate control button to close the liftgate you perform one or more of the following:
  • Open the driver side door
  • Close the driver side door
  • Start the engine
  • Have just been extolling the many virtues of the advanced engineering in the WK2 to your friends
It's intermittent, and probably happens once or twice a week. You watch it start to close but then it just decides to re-open. It's not encountering resistance, because it usually freaks out when it's only half-way through the closure cycle. Subsequently pushing the control button on the overhead console will cause it to shut (i.e. there is nothing obstructing the liftgate).

I have gotten into the habit of double checking my rear view to ensure that I am not driving off with an open liftgate.

If I had to hazard a guess, I would suspect it might have something to do with grounding or voltage transients.

nope, i know I start the truck all the time while its closing.. it just pauses for a second - then continues. Also, opening doors/getting in is fine (again, I load up the groceries, hit the close button, then get in and start it)

Yep, that's the typical scenario when it freaks out. Intermittent problems are very difficult to isolate.

Maybe it will be resolved thanks to the battery disconnect I performed yesterday for the transmission reset. Then again, given how securely attached/difficult it was to pull the negative terminal I'm reasonably certain I didn't have a bad ground at the terminal. I'll double-check the positive terminal later.

Well, that's odd. Today I left the liftgate open for a long time, and when I went to leave I got a message indicating I had to close it manually because automatic closure was temporarily unavailable.

After I pushed it closed the auto liftgate worked as normal. Never encountered that before.

Re: Odd automatic lift gate behavior

Yeah it will do that if you leave it open for too long. Ran into this when I left it n open overnight I the garage and when I went to close it I got an error beep.

As for the random reopening, I've had it happen once, but I think it was because I shifted into drive before it closed. Haven't tried it again to see if that causes the gate to open back up, but I did get worried thinking the camera had stopped working properly when all I saw was the sky till my wife brought me back to reality and pushed the close button again.

I have had that happen too, but generally it's something as trivial as opening the driver's side door.

You know, I think they may have patched that behavior in later revisions. Mine pops a warning about the liftgate being open... I have never seen the sky, despite having had ample opportunity for it to show me.

That behavior is mentioned in the owners manual. I often leave my liftgate open for many hours at a time. Sometimes I have to close it manually, while other times it will close with a touch of the button.

Haha, sounds like they redefined a bug as a feature by documenting it in the manual.

Of course, thanks to the replies I now know this is unrelated to the issue I started the thread about: the sporadic "liftgate freaks out while closing" behavior.
