Dropped it off this morning so they can replace the isolator.

Dicephalous have you had your car back in yet to have them look at this? My car went through a period where the low rpm shudder was really bad. The dealer told me this was the Torque converter breaking in. That part did smooth out as they said. I am just curious to hear if yours has changed at all?

I am still having a weird downshift shudder at WOT. I haven't had time to take it back. But everytime I move out to pass someone on a two lane road and I punch it while cruising at 45mph I feel the car shake and hesitate for about two seconds like it is trying to get into what I assume is a 2nd (or some lower) gear. It's a little scary but I have just learned to time passing someone a little differently.

What your explaining here is exactly what I am experiencing and what they are chasing.

I had the isolator replaced today and it did not affect the shudder. They are onto their next fix. My service advisor is running this back up the flag pole to Chrylser to see what they say.

Litespeedz, what the dealer is telling sounds like a load of bunk. it may smooth out, but have you tried driving it while towing some weight or a load of people in the Jeep? My shudder did subside in the beginning, but while driving with 3 other people in the car up a slight incline at highway speeds it aggravated the converter and sent me to the dealer.

Re: Ohh noooooessss, I have the shudder :(

UPDATE:

Chrysler says to replace the converter. I mentioned the correct converter not being available yet and to check. She will check, but fears Chyrsler will not give that information without a STAR number to reference against. She is going to check with her parts guy but also fears they will not have this information

I told them to make sure they had a shifter cable in stock as they are easily broken when replacing the converter

Re: Ohh noooooessss, I have the shudder :(

Made a call to Chrysler today to get a case number for proper documentation. They are running it up to the case manager and I am supposed to get a call by end of day tomorrow. I just want to make sure I am getting all the information that is available. I really don't want my transmission taken apart more than once (don't want it once but that doesn't sound like it is happening )

Re: Ohh noooooessss, I have the shudder :(

Wow, this sounds ugly. How is one converter correct and the other incorrect? How would we know which one we have? Just based on how it is behaving?

My whole driveline is starting to feel a little sloppy. I am noticing shifts are slower and either clunk or almost slip slightly after a gear change. I won't have time to bring it back in for two weeks.

It sounds like your dealer is at least willing to do this right. My dealer has been really unhelpful with this issue. I don't think they know much about the QDII and Overland model. Come to think of it, none of the local dealers do. This was the only one that had Overlands on the lot.

Re: Ohh noooooessss, I have the shudder :(

So I got some part numbers.....
OEM Torque converter is 68051241AA
Remanufactured Torque Converter is RL051241AA
Torque converter to help shudder is 0473652AB

I have left a message with my service tech to find out which converter they have orderd for me. I hope they knew enough to do some digging and ask the question I have asked. It is coming from Detroit and should be here in a couple days.

I will keep everyone udpated.

Re: Ohh noooooessss, I have the shudder :(

I find this all very interesting considering I thought the 5.7L drivetrain, including the transmission were brought over directly from the RAM pickups. It seems odd that WK2's would see a problem that hasn't been widespread on the Ram's. The 5.7L and 545 trans are one of the few things in this "totally redesigned" Grand Cherokee that aren't new!

If it's load related then mine will get a dose real quick when I hook up my 5000 lb enclosed trailer and haul it 3000 miles in April..........

I did some quick digging on dodgeforum.com and the stutter issue is widely know and from what I read there Dodge does not have a fix at this point. Seems to be 4X2 or 4X2 (rules out the transfer case isolators) and is most pronounced when it's in MDS mode. That might explain why there's a new TC coming out since it might be an issue on their entire 5.7L MDS Hemi lineup. http://dodgeforum.com/forum/4th-gen-...rom-dodge.html

Re: Ohh noooooessss, I have the shudder :(

In the STAR case I read today they talked about two different problem with shuddering. One, where the converter shutter under partial lock up (partial lock up is a normal condition) with slip over 30% (measured with a computer). Two, where the shutter is with the converter locked up (slip less than 10%). In these two cases, the converter replacement is the the fix (so they say) for the first (partial lock). If you get the shudder with the converter locked, the converter replacment is not the cure for your problems.
