Oil Change Indicator

I had the oil changed in my 2012 at about 6000 miles at the dealer. Today when I hit 7500 the oil change indicator came on. I am assuming that the dealer didn't reset the indicator, probably because it wasn't on when I had the oil changed the first time.

I need to reset the indicator but it will be out of sync with my next change. If I reset it next time I have the oil changed, even if it isn't on, will it actually reset?

Thanks

Re: Oil Change Indicator

Yes, but it won't tell you it worked. I did my first oil change at 3000 miles just because it made me feel better, and did the reset but got no indication it was successful. So I had to wait until the oil change indicator came on about 7000 miles later to know that it worked the first time. After that, of course, the indicator will go out to tell you it is reset.

Re: Oil Change Indicator

Is the oil change indicator just based on mileage or the condition of the oil? Our previous vehicle went straight by the mileage, but I've heard newer GM vehicles actually go by the condition the oil is in to gauge the life and when to change it.

The oil change indicator is based on mileage and not the condition of the oil.

Have you read the new owners manual ... it would disagree with you.

"Based on engine operation conditions, the oil change
indicator message will illuminate. This means that service
is required for your vehicle. Operating conditions
such as frequent short-trips, trailer tow, extremely hot or
cold ambient temperatures, and E85 fuel usage will
influence when the “Oil Change Required” message is
displayed. Severe Operating Conditions can cause the
change oil message to illuminate as early as 3,500 miles
(5 600 km) since last reset. Have your vehicle serviced as
soon as possible, within the next 500 miles (805 km)."

It's usually best to read the manual ... just sayin'

Re: Oil Change Indicator

The indicator is not based directly on the condition of the oil, but is more complex than simply based on mileage.

The indication is an estimate of oil condition based on vehicle operation.... and will vary from driver to driver.

Re: Oil Change Indicator

Thanks, I kind of thought this since it was odd my life dropped from 97% to 92% in 2 days and with less than 30 miles put on the vehicle. Figured I'd ask before making assumptions.

Yeah, it's "duty cycle" based. Mostly based on how many times the engine is started, with additional factors such as engine temperatures and perhaps engine time.

The only time mileage kicks in as a factor is if none of the other factors trigger the indicator, then it will come on at 7500 miles as a "last resort".

Also, it's programmed to come on at 500 miles prior to when it think it's actually will need to be changed. So if it comes on at 3500, then it really thinks 4000 is the "change it NOW" mile marker.

Re: Oil Change Indicator

Back to my previous question...as a general rule how often is the V6 oil to be changed? Is it every 3000,5000,7000 for example? Thanks

That's old thinking. Now that the vehicles monitor so much, picking any of those numbers would be the wrong answer. There is a reason you can't find that in the manual. The answer would be different for every driving situation. Trust the car. My 2011 Acura was the same way.

If you want to beat a dead horse ... pick a number.
