My Hemi seems to run high oil temp: once warmed up, cruising on highway, temp is around 175F. If I get on it a few times, it easily climbs to 210F.
A few more spirited accelerations in 1 (close to redline) and oil goes to to 235F!
This is in fair weather, around 65F.
Are you experiencing the same? Maybe it's normal...
My Z06 Vette does not run that high: it's a bigger engine and I really push it hard quite often. Cruising on highway, temp is 160F, hard driving takes it to 210F maybe. An a hot summer day, hard driving in the mountains will take is to 240F though
MIne seems to be around 189-210 most of the time, I dont look at it that often this time of the year. Once I start pulling my boat again I will watch it, the Hemi's have a oil cooler but I have my reservations about how well they will work.
I suspect my next mod will be to add a larger aux oil and trans cooler. It was nice of them to put them in but I have a feeling they may not be enough for heavy towing. I pulled my boat once last October with the wife's Limited and things were creeping up temp wise but never became an issue.
Actually, it's more like 200F when cruising on the freeway.
On my morning commute today, 50% city and 50% freeway, driving super easy (dont think i went above 2000rpm), it ended up at 205F. This seems too high to me. I cant imagine on a hot summer day, driving in the mountains, temp will go to the roof!
I checked mine today after your post. It was ruinning 188 after some city(ish) 35-50 mph driving with some traffic lights. I would not worry about it much. The range is 100-300 so 188 is about in the middle.
In consumer vehicles, engines are typically designed to run around with oil at 200-212F all day long in arctic ambient temperatures or blazing Bermuda days. You WANT your engine oil to be around 200F so that it works at its intended lubricating temp and any accumulated water is more quickly evaporated. Oil is exposed to much higher temperatures when it is splashed under the piston skirts than where the temperature gauge is getting its reading, so don't sweat it. The Corvette sounds like it was running a bit cool; my most recent Vettes (C5) always fell within 190F-210F (oil temp) and 230F coolant temps no matter how I drove them.
I just took a highway trip (500+ miles round trip) and noticed my oil was at 195F the two times I checked, oil pressure at 49psi, trans at 125F and coolant at 205F during 45F outside temps at 75+MPH interstate cruise. The MPG for 250+ mile non-stop at 75MPH was 19.2mpg for those who may care.
On every trip where I normally check gauges on my other cars during the trip, I now just scroll the EVIC on the WK2. My temps and pressure have stayed within 10 degrees +/- what I saw this last trip. Towing will bump the trans temp up and also have some impact to engine oil temps. Hot oil (200F or 220F) is better than oil that's too cool because the oil needs to be hot to properly lube the fine-tolerance and high-speed internals.
