One Thing or Another...Now It's a Leaking Radiator

I hope this isn't an omen in 2015 for what's in store for my Jeep this year...

I just got my 2014 GC Overland V6 4x4 back from the dealership (12/26) for the second time in a month for yet another reflash attributed to rough transmission shifts, an oil change/tire rotation, and to get the recall done for the steering column (SCCM). So far so good...transmission seems to be behaving as it should.

Now I've been off most the week for the Holidays, so my Jeep has been sitting in the driveway most of the time while I'm at home taking care of some home improvements. We've had some warm weather lately earlier on so I was even able to give it a complete hand wash...looking good...just in time since the second half of the week it started to get cold again...at nights temps are down in the teens. Just the other day I left to complete some choirs and get a haircut...getting ready for the big night out my wife and I have planned for New Years Eve, and while driving to the supermarket I noticed a faint smell of something different in the cabin. I think nothing of it, and complete my choirs.

New Years Eve...we jump in the Jeep and head for the Capitol Grille restaurant to meet friends, and I smell that weird odor again (wife smells it too)...almost like leather that's been heated up by the hot sun with all the windows closed...but again it's faint and I pay no real attention to it. We get to the restaurant and I drop the wife at the door (cause it's cold outside), and I proceed to find a parking spot in the packed lot (cause I'm too cheap to pay for valet). Just as I pull into a spot, in the headlights I notice steam coming up from the center of the hood. So I open the hood, grab the flashlight in back (low and behold it actual works), and while looking through the grill I notice the top middle portion of the radiator is wet...but the overflow tank still shows there's fluid in it. No obvious signs of damage.

So now I'm pissed...really? Just turned 10,000 miles and the radiator now needs to be replaced? What's weird is I just read a couple threads here on Jeep Garage about how some people have had their radiators replaced on their 2014 Grand Cherokees...is this yet another trend? So it looks like yet another trip to the dealership is in store for my Jeep. This really sucks.

Re: One Thing or Another...Now It's a Leaking Radiator

***UPDATE***

Called the dealership today about this (and reported it to Chrysler Customer Care...who also placed this issue under the same open case number from last week for the latest rough 2 to 1 downshift reflash). The dealership said they would order a new radiator, and it will be ready for install when I drop off my Jeep 1/6. Hopefully all goes smooth, and the right part is ordered!

I wonder if leaking radiators are common for the WK2 GC since the dealership ordered the new part without even seeing my Jeep yet?

That certainly sucks.

I'll have to start keeping an eye (and nose) on mine. We've got another 2-punch arctic storm coming followed by a nice long stretch of sub-zero weather.

Re: One Thing or Another...Now It's a Leaking Radiator

***UPDATE***

This Tuesday morning (1/6) I dropped off my 2014 GC Overland to have the radiator replaced (along to look at why the radio is stuck on "waiting" before it pairs with my phone...something I noticed after my last transmission reflash a week prior). I got a call at the end of the day by the service manager saying they needed another day with my Jeep to finish it up, and that I would not be charged an additional day on my rental. Hopefully I get my GC back today.

My rental this time is a bare bones 2014 Wrangler Unlimited (with hand crank windows!). I always wanted to test drive one of these...a higher model of course...and I'm glad I did since now I've lost all desire to own one. Compared to my cushy Overland, I feel like I'm driving a tank. Handling is terrible, so is the gas mileage, and it's bumpy as hell. Maybe if I were 18 again and lived in the woods, but as an adult commuting to work everyday in bumper to bumper traffic...no way would I ever purchase a Wrangler, at least without a kidney belt. I would definitely wait until the redesigned 2017 comes out.

Re: One Thing or Another...Now It's a Leaking Radiator

***UPDATE***

All fixed (fingers crossed!)...radiator was replaced (side tank was leaking...part defect), my phone pairs with the radio again, and I was not charged at all for the rental. I'll be keeping an eye on the temp gauge & level in the expansion tank over the course of the week just to be sure.

All around, another excellent job from this dealership. I'll tell you this though, I won't be missing that stripper 4 door Wrangler I had as a rental...it's nice to have remote start, heated seats, and a heated steering wheel when the outside temps drop to -4 degrees!
