I've had this issue with my 12 Limited since getting in in Nov 2011. It has taken as many as 11 pushes to lock. Just yesterday, it took 6. Had it to the dealer shortly after purchase and it worked perfectly for them. Since reading this thread this morning, I tried it 5 times in the garage with no smartphone near and it worked perfectly on 5 tries. I then put the fob in my shirt pocket and held my iPhone 6+ between it and the Jeep. Worked perfectly on 5 tries again. Only difference that comes to mind is that I had been driving it yesterday, but not this morning. Maybe static from riding on the leather seats is a factor.

Yeah it takes driving it usually before mine will act up. Once it works it always works till I drive it. It is almost like it has to hunt for the code. Keyless entry systems with rolling code remotes have to do that sometimes. But this should be a wired system.

For me any time the keys are in the same pocket as my phone the lock button or unlock handle won't work. It happens to me every single time without fail.

It's probably a good idea to avoid having your keys in the same pocket as your phone anyway. Gorilla glass or not, a hard piece of plastic and any keys you have attached can act as a glass breaker punch tool if you bang your leg against something. Even when placed so it's on the back side, it's still potentially bad for the phone.

Not to resurrect a post from the depths but I noticed something in regards to this that the others having this problem might benefit from. I have just basically lived with this as it isn't a huge deal. Just more of an annoyance than anything if you are in a hurry. I have tried phones in my pocket, phones away from the Jeep, remote in hand, all of that, and still the same.
What I theorize is happening, is that, the sensor detecting your hand when you grasp the handle to unlock the door is so sensitive that when you put your hand up there to push the lock button it tries to unlock the doors. That is why I was getting a parking light flash then having to wait while I pushed the lock button a few times before the security system sorted out that no I didn't want the Jeep unlocked I actually wanted it locked. So what I have started doing is going to push the button and watching the lights on the mirror. If I get a flash I wait a second then push the button to lock. It has solved the issue. It still slows you down but not as much as having to push the button as much as 11 times before it figures it out.

Exactly. Never carry my iphone and keys in same pocket to avoid scratching phone. Now who knows if having both in same pocket is the culprit but since i never carry them together never had a problem locking door with outside lock button. I never have to take out the fob.

On another note, i did noticed the other day after i locked it after using the handle lock button i walked behind the lift gate trying to get around the truck and soon as i passed the lift gate the truck unlocked... I was like WTF?

Luckily i noticed right then and there and locked it again. I have read before of others experiencing this but this was my 1st time. Any one else?

I've had the mysterious unlock happen twice. I'm baffled by that as well. And like you said, I'm glad I was still near enough to the vehicle to hear it unlock.

Resurrecting this thread, I'm having the same issue lately. Takes multiple presses to lock the door, but the parking lights always flash on the first press.


-not grabbing the handle while pressing. Usually using pointer finger or thumb on the button without even touching another part of the handle


-Phone isn't a concern. I'm almost always standing near the rear door when I lock the car, so pushing with my left hand. Key is always in my left pocket closest to the door handle and phone is my right pocket, away from the handle.




I'm also having problems with phantom unlocking when the jeep is locked with the handle button and the keyfob stays close to the Jeep. My keys hang right inside my garage door, so maybe 8 feet away from the jeep. After 10 minutes or so, the jeep will unlock itself and come alive like I grabbed the door handle, even when I'm physically nowhere near it.

Took my 2014 Limited in for an oil change two weeks ago. The work order also said they did the uConnect security update on the 8.4AN (even though I had already downloaded and applied it), and a transmission flash TSB.

As soon as I got home I noticed it took 3 or 4 pushes on the button on the door handle to lock the door. Likewise, it would take 2, 3 or 4 grabs on the handle to unlock it. The memory seat was intermittent too......sometimes it would go to the right position when you hit the Start button and sometimes you had to push the button on the door.

We've had this 2014 for 3 years, since May of 2013, and have never had a problem with the locking/unlocking function or the memory seat.

I went out this morning and disconnected the negative battery terminal (what is that circuit board on the battery terminal?) I was almost afraid to try and pull the terminal off. Anyway, I let it set disconnected for about 25 minutes and hooked it back up and all is working as it is supposed to now. I didn't lose any settings anywhere. Even the seat positions were still in memory.

I think that disconnecting the negative battery terminal and letting those Control Modules drain off is the first thing to try if you are having uConnect quirky crap.

I don't see any connection between Uconnect functions and the proximity key function.


The week after I posted on this thread, I had absolutely no issues with the lock button working first time. Then it started creeping up and happening again recently. It's totally intermittent.

I've had this problem a long time, too. I've learned to avoid using it. When I pull up, park and get out, I press the lock button inside the door while it is open. Doors lock, I close the door and all is well.

A workaround, but it works the first time, every time.

I'm having the same issues with my 2014 Limited.
Tried on a 2016 Limited and it always worked, get out, press lock button right away, doors locked.
I'm almost thinking it started on mine after that shifter recall where a couple control modules were updated...
- Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
- Transmission Control Module (TCM)
- Radio Frequency Hub (RFH)
- Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC)
