overland 4wd stuck in sand

Took it out in the desert a few miles from the house to do some shooting.
drove into a wash (sand/gravel) and needed to crest an embankment. Put it in 4wd ( sand) and got it stuck. Outside , looking at the situation, the front wheels,especially the right,
had dug a hole but the backs were pretty much on top, just a slight depression. What to do?. No shovel on board. So, removed by hand most of the sand piled up behind the right front wheel. Took it out of 4wd and backed easy, the old fashioned way, out of the holes.
So it seems the front wheels were spinning in 4wd but the rears apparently were not. Thought all wheels would pull in 4wd. Couldn't believe i got it stuck while in 4wd.
Would be interested in any comments from the knowledgeable people i know are on the forum.

Re: overland 4wd stuck in sand

Did you air the tires down before going into the sand?

On the beach I drop the pressure to 17 psi.

It handles this sand with no problem. We all watched a guy with a new Wrangler drive right onto the beach the last time I was out. It was only a few minutes before he had his shovel out.

no i didn't. But should the front have been spinning and digging when apparently the rear was not pulling? Simply taking it out of 4wd let it ease right out of there.

With the computer making all the decisions these days I have no idea what they are supposed to do. I think 4 wheel low would provide power to all 4, but even then I'm not sure.

If your Jeep has 4WD, then it is always in 4WD - you can't take it out of 4WD and into 2WD if that is what you're thinking.

I believe (hope) he meant 4WD-LOW.

Hmm. that's right . So it is low range where the problem showed up.
i assumed it would have Positraction or similar where the wheel with the most
resistence gets the power.

Re: overland 4wd stuck in sand

Ah, gotcha!

I know QDII and QTII share the same transfer case, neither of which are locking I don't believe (even in 4-LO), but I do believe they have the capability to send 100% of power to either axle.

Also the front axle has an open diff, and the rear axle has ELSD (on QDII equipped vehicles) which in essence locks the rear diff when needed.

Sounds to me like the open front diff is what did you in since just the one tire dug the hole.

Re: overland 4wd stuck in sand

I think this is what we supposed to have but don't seem to work as advertised.

Quadra-Trac II

Quadra-Trac II was introduced in 1999 and it employs a two-speed chain-driven transfer case featuring three modes of operation, "4-All Time", "N" or neutral, and "4-Lo". In "4-All Time", torque is applied to the rear wheels under normal driving conditions. If the rear axle starts rotating at a significantly higher rate than the front axle, hydraulic pressure builds up in the gerotor and causes the clutch pack to progressively transfer torque to the front axle until both axles return to the same speed. "N" or neutral mode is intended for towing the vehicle. In "4-Lo", the front and rear axles are locked together through a 2.72 gear reduction ratio. In 2005 Jeep added traction control and replaced the New Venture Gear NV247 transfer case with the NV245 transfer case.

Re: overland 4wd stuck in sand

Just looked it up and apparently the QTII transfer case does lock in 4-LO.

As far as I know QD2/QT2 in 4-LO is locking the front and rear shafts. See the owners manual page 438:

==============>8==============
Do not drive in 4WD-LOW Range on dry pavement; driveline damage may result. 4WD-LOW Range locks front and rear drivelines together and does not allow for differential action between the front to rear driveshafts. Driving in 4WD-LOW on pavement will cause driveline binding; use only on wet or slippery surfaces.
==============>8==============

Also, although the front diff is an open one, the JGC has BLD which is always on. The Wheel with no traction will be held by the breaks so that power can be reverted to the wheel that still has traction.

I've tried a few low traction situations like those and the drivetrain behaved as expected so this is quite a mystery for me.
