Overland Alarm goes off for no reason

Hi,

It's now been twice in one week interval that my Overland Alarm went off for no apparent reason. Both time the car was parked in my driveway with no rain neither wind. Very annoying and not reassuring when I will go on vacation and leave my car in a public parking lot where it can buzz for minutes and annoy the whole block until I find out it happened.

Does anyone have a similar problem?
-JGauthier

Yes, quite a few have reported this. There are threads discussing this already.

yep i have read all of them and they all have their subtleties. (rain, wind, wash, etc). I don't meet any of these conditions. Today i was sitting in a restaurant where I could see my vehicle which was at 40 feet from me. No one messing around it and, it did it again. I am sending it for inspection tomorrow at my dealer. We will see but i am sceptic when it comes to electrical problems. I am afraid that they will not be able to reproduce and will never find the problem...

Re: Overland Alarm goes off for no reason

Won't a computer diagnostic show the alarm events and the source? That might give them a place to start looking.

Re: Overland Alarm goes off for no reason

What did you have to do to turn the alarm off? If you had to lock/unlock the doors with the key fob to get the alarm to stop, then it was the security alarm. If you had to press the panic button on the key fob to get it to stop, then it was the panic alarm. They are 2 totally different alarms and would have different causes for them to go off when they shouldn't.

A couple of threads mention a defective switch on the tailgate. That's my guess for your case.

unfortunately, i got no diagnostic from the dealer today. They said to look at the evic next time the alarm goes off, before disarming it. It should give a precise indication of the source (door, hood, tailgate, etc) and help them to find the issue.

to answer the question, i had to lock/unlock to disarm. The panic button doesn't work.

Re: Overland Alarm goes off for no reason

Here is a follow-up on my problem. The alarm went-off twice since my last post. Both times, the EVIC showed the following message: Remote Start Disabled — Start Vehicle to Reset.

Re: Overland Alarm goes off for no reason

This has happened to me a few times but not in a couple of weeks. There seemed to be a rash of incidents where mine did it 3 or 4 times in a 2 week period and now has stopped. Unfortunately I typically park in my building's parking garage (home and work) so I am not near enough to hear the vehicle alarm going off...I'm just assuming it went off because when I go to open the door the horn blows and I get the remote start disabled warning message. I plan to mention it when I take the jeep in for its first oil change next month. I'm hopeful that it won't do it again until then...I hate it when I hear a car horn going off in the distance...so irritating!

btw, in my own investigation of the problem, i have read in the user manual that in order to arm/lock the car, you should do it while the driver's door is opened. Prior to that, i always pushed the handle lock button once the door was closed. Since i started doing it with the door opened, i did not get any false alarm. I am wondering if this may be related...

What's your take on this? Do you guys know if there is a difference between both approaches?

thanks
JG

Re: Overland Alarm goes off for no reason

I've got the same problem with my Overland, with the same message from the EVIC: Remote Start Disabled — Start Vehicle to Reset, and it's happened after I tried to remotely start the vehicle, but because the door was opened, I couldn’t do it. So, I’m thinking that this is somehow connected; I’ll probably try to disconnect the battery to reset the system.

"While the driver's door is opened" if you're pushing the interior door lock, because if you do that while the door is closed, you can't open the door to get out. Pushing the handle lock button with door closed is also correct. From the manual:

Press the Keyless Enter-N-Go Start/Stop button until the Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) indicates that the vehicle ignition is “OFF” (refer to “Starting Procedures” in “Starting And Operating” for further information). Then either press the power door LOCK switch while the driver or passenger door is open, press the lock button on the front driver or passenger door handle with a valid key fob in range, or press the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter LOCK button.
