I've owned numerous vehicles with leather interiors and have never seen this type of premature wear. Clearly, it's a problem with how the Saddle leather, at least in some GCs, was improperly tanned and dyed.
Yes i have read only happening with the Saddle interior. Don't know if its a different leather than the other colors?

Re: Overland Summit leather issues

I hope that they took care of this before my build date. I had to have the saddle black and compromised on the exterior color to get it.

To those with problems, have you been conditioning your leather? I've done mine twice already, in two months.

BuckeyeSRT,

How many miles on your summit? That is unreal for being so new. My saddle looks great at almost 10k miles and 8mos old.

Re: Overland Summit leather issues

Mine is Overland and I had my driver side seat leather replaced 6 month ago. Interestingly, quality of new leather is better.

Re: Overland Summit leather issues

Just had my seat cushion cover replaced too. 10,000 miles and it looked like hell. Dealer tried to make me feel like they were doing me a HUGE favor... Because it was a "wear item". The new cover seems to have more consistent color and higher quality.

Re: Overland Summit leather issues

I wonder if being a "summit" means anything...maybe they used the older design even with the 2012. I have a late 2011 (june 2011 build date) Overland and I believe I have the new leather seats in mine.

Summit is the same except for different color leather on the dash and a few more electronics.

i understand, but the seats are different in the fact they say "summit", so they have to come from a different batch vs. the overland. adn I'm sure they produce 10xs the overland vs summit.

It's possible, but more likely the seats are built on the same line with a different stitching program toggled on when a Summit seat is required.

Re: Overland Summit leather issues

i guess the only way to find out is if there are tags with dates on the covers. My guess is each lot is produced shipped and installed when necessary which makes me think the summits could have been produces months prior to being installed while others were produced and installed sooner making it very likely that some overlands got the better quality before others (summits). I could be totally off with this thinking and it also makes me wonder if Jeep would still use a certain lot of seats knowing they were of lower quality.

Re: Overland Summit leather issues

Producing a batch of summit and then switching over to the regular overland is another possibility. But in this day and age, supply line logistics to avoid warehousing cuts costs and drives profits.

Regards to knowingly using inferior material, probably. Some bean-counter can use a probability analysis: how many owners will demand a warranty repair, the cost of making those repairs vs. the cost of scrapping all that per-purchased material. Unless they can jam it back on the supplier.

Maybe I'm being unfair to their new owners, Fiat, who is responsible for upgrading the interiors from the vinyl hell that Chrysler used to be famous for.
