Actually that isn't true. It can be Re-calibrated using the factory scan tool. From that base calibration it does it's own relearn routines.

The biggest issue with the sensors is when an adhesive bubble gets between the sensor and the glass (application error and it comes from the supplier that way). Usually you can see it if you look closely and it will cause issues with wiper operation.

About where would the sensor be? When I look on the glass it just looks like a solid black film in that area. I don't see a "cut out" when the sensor could peak through.

Is the rain sensor suppose to come preinstalled on the glass from the factory?

That black area is the sensor. There is a socket on the inside, attached to the windshield, which receives a plug from the sensor electronics hanging, sort of, from the back of the rearview mirror.
