I have a 2011 WK2 3.6L. My Mil light came on and used a code reader to pull P0298. Is this something I can fix without taking it in to the shop? Research says it means Engine Oil Overtemp. Any help is appreciated.
I got the warning light and trouble code after 3.5 months of hard driving up a lot of mountain highway inclines. The trouble light cleared after two days of normal driving. I suspected that I just needed an oil change since it was 6k miles since last change. This was confirmed by the service tech at the dealer. No other service indicators or warning lights showed up. So, lesson for me, with normal driving you could probably go 8k miles between changes per the maintenance guide. Harder driving would require oil changes sooner.
What it actually is, is it because you were driving at what Chrysler calls, "Higher Altitudes". Because of that, the PCM will mistakenly set the DTC. The PCM just needs to get a Flash and it should not happen again.
I got the trouble light and P0298 code again. This time after only 1300 miles since oil change. The light didn't clear after driving at lower altitudes. Dealer changed out the oil temp sensor. It seemed to fix it, but we'll see.
