P0298 trouble code

I have a 2011 WK2 3.6L. My Mil light came on and used a code reader to pull P0298. Is this something I can fix without taking it in to the shop? Research says it means Engine Oil Overtemp. Any help is appreciated.

Re: P0298 trouble code

If it's still under warranty why would you do it yourself?

Re: P0298 trouble code

I got the warning light and trouble code after 3.5 months of hard driving up a lot of mountain highway inclines. The trouble light cleared after two days of normal driving. I suspected that I just needed an oil change since it was 6k miles since last change. This was confirmed by the service tech at the dealer. No other service indicators or warning lights showed up. So, lesson for me, with normal driving you could probably go 8k miles between changes per the maintenance guide. Harder driving would require oil changes sooner.

Re: P0298 trouble code

What it actually is, is it because you were driving at what Chrysler calls, "Higher Altitudes". Because of that, the PCM will mistakenly set the DTC. The PCM just needs to get a Flash and it should not happen again.

Re: P0298 trouble code

I got the trouble light and P0298 code again. This time after only 1300 miles since oil change. The light didn't clear after driving at lower altitudes. Dealer changed out the oil temp sensor. It seemed to fix it, but we'll see.

Re: P0298 trouble code

It was either 208+ or no reading.

Re: P0298 trouble code

Sounds like bad sensor wiring to me, doubt that a flash will fix.

Got the trouble code again, this time the service guy at the dealer said there was a software update that was needed. No problems seen yet after a month of driving.

Re: P0298 trouble code

Wonder if the software fix was "If the temp reading goes out of range, keep last good reading...."

It is that "or no reading" that would concern me.
