P0302 Check engine light keeps coming on

I have a 2011 GC overland with the V-6 and about 17K miles - recently the check engine light comes on and I checked the code and it is P0302 "Cyl #2 misfire detected" sometimes the light goes off on its own bit later comes back on. It seems to happen when the car is idling or running at low rpm - any ideas on what's going on here?

Re: P0302 Check engine light keeps coming on

I read about the head failure issue, boy this does not sound good. Anyone else dealt with this issue? Does it do more harm to the engine to keep driving it? My dealer is far away and I hate getting jerked around with warranty issues. I need to take the car on a 1600 mile road trip next month.

Re: P0302 Check engine light keeps coming on

I just made a similar road trip in hot weather with no problem. That said I'd suggest checking for the misfire history with a scan tool.

OTOH if you have been getting a P0302 then the damage may have already been done.

What has happened to others is that the mpg will go down, idle may get rough, and eventually you will feel a loss of power as the compression drops. By that time the head is already ruined but unless something breaks (e.g. swallow a valve) probably little else will be damaged. (never say never)

Re: P0302 Check engine light keeps coming on

Like the last post, if it is the head failure which has been noted by Chrysler, no further damage will Occur to the engine and you can drive it until it is Convenient for you to have the head replaced.

19k miles and its in the shop for repair - don't wait until your warrenty runs out, you might have to eat the cost

I had the same problem. Mine was the cylinder head. Take it to a dealer and get it checked. The first occurrence expect the dealer to just to an update to the computer. That probably won't fix it, because it did not fix mine, but that is what Jeep tells them to do the first time. My Jeep didn't have a tick when I took it in so they may just skip the computer update. I was told it is fine to drive as the only part that will be damaged would be the cylinder head which was going to be replaced. Hope this helps

Can't believe how smoothly this went. Took jeep in they gave me a rental car day later job is done and jeep runs great. Wait until you need an oil change because they change the oil & filter as part as the job. They must have also done 7-8 computer updates.

This is exactly what happened to me. I read on here that if your check engine light comes one more than likely it is a cylinder misfire. Took it to the dealer they flashed the computer the first time. 3 days later light came back on. I went back to the dealer and said don't flash the computer today so I have to come back in 3 more days with the problem. They hooked it up and saw it was a misfire in the cylinder head. I asked if it would hurt the engine to keep driving on it, they stated no. Check engine light went off for about a week while driving as I am waiting the 3-6 weeks for the head to come in. Today the engine light came back on and the part just came in. Looking at a 2 day process per the dealer. Hope everyone gets their jeep checked out for this problem that seems to be happening to all JGC. I'll post back on how everything turns out when it is completed.

Re: P0302 Check engine light keeps coming on

Interesting. Seems like more than .5% but maybe they all come here. Wish Chrysler would quantify the issue so we would know who is at risk else all with Pentastars are liable to face "diminished value".

Re: P0302 Check engine light keeps coming on

Just got my Jeep back today. It was a number 2 Cylinder head that was misfiring. They replaced the whole head and recharged my compressor. All in all it took 2 and a half days to complete. So far the Jeep is running great! Hope everyone has a happy holiday!
