Re: Paint Defect in 2014 Billet Silver

Fix as in repaint locally or have a new hood shipped from the factory?

Repaint at dealer or at their body shop service provider like here in Cleveland Suburban Collision has snagged 90% of all dealer and insurance work so most of our dealers don't have a paint booth anymore.

Body panels are stocked/shipped unpainted so "factory" painted is not an option.

They could not get my fender flares to lay flush so they replaced them but since they are stocked unpainted they had to paint them. They did an excellent job technically, however, my fender flares are now a darker red than the body. It kinda looks like my wheel wells have dark red "mascara" highlights.

They shut down (supposedly) all production 12/22 for 3 weeks to install the new "tricolor" painting system at JNAP. I am quite sure these sags and runs are as a result of heavy base coats since they have to create the paint depth, etc all in the same physical paint layer. The new tricolor system will allow them to have a thinner base and then the "creative" middle layer, also thinner....equals less runs and more paint options...they are resuming (supposedly) production with just white, grays, black "initially" then adding colors (when?).

That's what I'm afraid of. I'd rather not mess with the factory paint if it's not 100% necessary. Guess I'll just chalk it up as part of the "jeep owning experience"

Ya, hood, no way. My hand was forced since the front corners were lifting and they couldn't get them to stick.

I have a June 2103 build Overland with Max Steel and I've noticed a few spots too. Breaking the factory paint would be worse than the few I have. Took me a year to notice the first one so not very noticable except to me. And I am very picky.

I'll have the dealer look at it when I pick up my plates. I'm going to ask if they can swap hoods with another jeep on the lot.. Long shot I know, but I can ask.

So if I had waited 2 months to order my Billet SRT I would have gotten a paint job with the new system which is probably substantially better? Ugh...oh well can't change it now.

Re: Paint Defect in 2014 Billet Silver

Gave mine a quick glanceover while in the sun when I was dropping it off for clearbra...it's not perfect but I don't have any huge areas like that. My next concern is whether the clearbra guy can get the factory clear impact sheets off from in front of the rear wheels without damaging the paint, anyone have experience with this? I'm on the hook if he damages it he made that point clear but I said go ahead because I figured it would be okay.

Re: Paint Defect in 2014 Billet Silver

Just got back from the dealer. They had their body guy look at my hood, he agrees that it is defective. Dealer is willing to swap hoods with another silver jeep!

That is good to hear i cringe at the thought of repainting the hood on a new car like that. Messing with factory paint is not good unless it has to be done which is often unavoidable . Good thing you asked about it.
