Paint Defect in 2014 Billet Silver

Yeah, I figured I would get some push back, but they were very courteous. The body shop manager even advised me not to break into the factory paint. He recommended the hood swap.

Eh, probably same as the one I rejected with the paint run on hood....accepted by a less discerning buyer who may never notice it.

Lol, I actually asked about that. They said they would have to disclose it at time of sale, probably add a discount or something.

Ya guess they would since they "serviced it"....most customers, unlike the smart ones like u and I , would let them repaint it and Chrysler would pay them to do it under warranty so it is easy for them to take care of you.

I am compelled to plug FCA as they on balance are taking care of customers. Try this at a GM or Toyota dealership, IMHO.

Re: Paint Defect in 2014 Billet Silver

There is something very wrong with the paint process from Jeep. Sadly, I don't think the issue has been fixed as some speculated. I was minutes away from pulling the trigger on a 2015 Billet Steel Overland when I looked out front at the Jeep waiting for me and noticed 3 baseball sizes "light spots" on the hood staring at me. I know they had just rinsed it off so at first glance I thought it was condensation from the heat (almost like on a glass of ice water on a hot day). The spots were on the passenger side of the hood near the front corner on the lower section of the side of the hood if that makes sense. I should have grabbed a photo.

I started too look around the lot and every single Billet Silver Jeep and even the Durangos I saw had similar paint defects on each hood.

To me it basically looks like a concentration of the metallic fleck that has pooled in one spot. You see it best in direct sunlight because it catches and reflects light which makes it look like a "lighter area of paint."

The salesperson was not pleased at all that I walked away from the deal (but that's another story entirely, the paint defects were the straw that broke the camel's back).

Anyway, seems like a major problem with the billet silver for sure. I can't believe these pass any sort of quality control though. Crazy part is, we almost bought a used 2014 and it too had a light spot on the hood. I assumed it was bad paint touch-up since it was used but I'm convinced now it's the same paint defect. So that makes about 5 Jeeps/Dodge vehicles I've personally witnessed.

I can't pay $50,000 for a vehicle with obvious paint flaws and I'm sure not going to accept paint work on a brand new vehicle. Glad I noticed to walk away.

I really like the billet silver, the chrome is less flashy...shame I will probably never find a perfect one. Can you imagine trying to find a flawless one AND the right pricing???

Re: Paint Defect in 2014 Billet Silver

I've always liked silver but it's one of those colors that are really hard to get right. I can't remember the last time I saw any silver vehicle that didn't throw off that sharkskin, slightly cloudy look of light/dark areas as the lighting changed. That makes it tough to match if you ever need any paint work done.

Yet, I'm considering the color on my next Jeep...

Yeah...unfortunately the paint is pretty rough. I've got a white 2015 SRT and week to week I pick up another ripple or bump or inconsistency. Just today the sun hit a rear panel and a new lump of paint was visible. The car is a beast, but the finish hurts the eyes sometimes

Paint Defect in 2014 Billet Silver

I have a '15 Billet with about 900 miles and have noticed one or two small oval shaped spots on my hood that are definitely in the paint and not the clear. For me to really see them, the sun would have to be shining at a certain angle while i'm actively looking for them. Granted my spots may be leas noticeable than others with the same defects. But to me its not worth the hassle of a respray. Billet can be a tough color to match if you don't know what your doing.
