Paint Defect in 2014 Billet Silver

A week or so ago I discovered 3 oval shaped spots on my brand new 2014 Billet Silver Grand Cherokee. Car has about 4500 miles on it and has been hand washed weekly. I originally thought it was a defect in the clear coat but the dealership confirmed it was actually in the paint. They attempted to buff it out with no success to come to this conclusion. Now they are having to get permission from jeep to authorize repainting the hood and rear drivers side door. The spots are very faint but do stand out under certain lighting conditions.

Pretty frustrating as they do not have loner cars and the earliest I can receive the car back is 1.5 weeks from the initial drop off. I also have a clear bra installed on the hood that will have to be removed and reinstalled. Of course they don't want to replace it with the same brand and quality that I currently have.

Hopefully this is an isolated incident and not a problem that other members experienced. They are doing their best to down play this at the dealership but having my brand new jeep already get a paint job isn't something I signed up for.

Is it normal for jeep dealerships to not offer loaner or a rental car for something like this? I am thinking about escalating it to the general manager whom I've met.

Just a word of caution...metallic paint schemes are not easy to match perfectly unless the paint tech is experienced. Frankly, if it were me, and as you say, "The spots are very faint but do stand out under certain lighting conditions.", I would leave well enough alone. But that's just me.

Jeep as a whole does not give loaner cars some dealers may choose to do it on their own but most do not. the maxcare service contract gives you 5 days of rental with any warranty work you have done. Is it noticeable enough to make it worth getting all that paint work done on your new car like that? If it is very noticeable than yeah get it fixed but if its barely detectable I would not get paint work done like that. you would think they could match something that new but there are threads on here with brand new jeeps being painted for one reason or another with paint matching issues. If it is something that will eat at you though then get it done but you also don't want to be the one with the different shade of paint on the door and hood 3 years from now as it ages.

I expressed concern over how well the paint job would be only to get a response of, "we are not Maaco." I am very hesitant to have them do the work but it is going to bother me as they are visible enough.... Will keep my fingers crossed.

Re: Paint Defect in 2014 Billet Silver

I have something similar.

I have one oval spot that seems lighter on the hood and a another spot on the fender, barely noticeable but I know they are there. I have a maximum steel JGC so the paint will be near impossible to match, I wonder if I'd insist they would just replace with a factory painted fender and hood?

Although I have not tried to polish the spots off.

I have the exact same thing on my passenger side door on my billet SRT. You can only see it when the lighting is just right but it's there. I thought about saying something about it, but honestly don't want to get anything on the car repainted unless I have to. Luckily for me it's only that one small spot but I know exactly what you're talking about.

Same here on my Granite 2014 Overland.

I noticed one on the hood, and the drivers door...first noticed them right after I clay bared & waxed the vehicle. Each is about the size of a softball, and I only see them in certain lighting conditions.

Thanks Chrysler for the shitty paint job as well as the rough shifting transmission.

agree completely dont mess with factory paint unless you really have to. i have a round area on the hood about the size of a silver dollar very minor, but detectable if you try to look for it. i would never let them touch factory paint for that.

Yeah I agree. While I'm not pleased with it I'm probably the only person that would ever notice it. Mine is probably the size of a small bottle of water or so. Wish I would have noticed it at delivery but I was too darn excited to leave the dealership lol.

Re: Paint Defect in 2014 Billet Silver

well..well...well...I guess I'm not the only one with this issue after all... I have the BBPC on mine and my oval shapes are on both front fenders, and again can only be seen under certain lighting conditions and also under certain angles only. I think the op knows it has to be at a certain angle as well. it is weird, if your directly on top of it you can't tell at all, but start to shift in either direction and it starts to show. I also find it odd to be "football, oval" shaped as well. any idea what this is from? anyway I would think having this defect with billet silver would be hardly noticeable, and my black about the worst. I agree with "train" man though just leave it be. the can of worms could really be just begging to let loose if you have it repainted.

Re: Paint Defect in 2014 Billet Silver

I have one spot on my hood too, as someone else mentioned it's about the size of a softball, maybe a little smaller. Only shows up in bright sunlight at the right angle, very faint. Mine is bright silver metallic. I first noticed it after a thorough first wash, clay bar, wax job that I performed shortly after purchasing it. I'm pretty OCD about paint and detailing, but I've learned to live with it, especially after what I had to go through to have my rear bumper properly painted and attached when I was rear-ended last year. As a manufacturing engineer, and hearing about others with the same isssue in similar places, it makes me think the programming of the paint robots in the paint shop is the root cause, they possibly start or stop at that point and shoot an extra blob of paint in the exact location each time. Either that, or there was another contaminant on these areas and the cars had to be pulled into a repair bay and fixed offline. This happens pretty regularly since stopping the line is a big taboo, especially for "small" cosmetic issues. I remember there were about 40 cars in repair bays over at Chrysler Belvidere because a supplier sent in transmission mounts that were not drilled/machined correctly.
