Re: Paint Rock Chip Damage is Extreme

Paint chip issues are why I had my Clearbra (or whatever brand it is) and Jeep mudflaps installed at the dealership before I even drove my new 2014 Limited off the lot. It also helps that the wheel well trim and such on the Limited is unpainted plastic.

Subaru paint for instance is known to chip easily, but after almost 10,000 miles on New England roads with Cleargard installed, the paint on the front end of my STI I traded in still looked like new.

Re: Paint Rock Chip Damage is Extreme

Mine has 27,000 miles and still has none of the chipping mentioned here...in fact very little chipping whatsoever.

Re: Paint Rock Chip Damage is Extreme

I have the same damage on my 14 Laredo E w/ stock tire size and mud flaps from day 1. To this point (2k miles), only the plastic film and plastic trim are pitted (badly). I've considered more protective plastic film, but I don't know if it's too late (already very rough to the touch).

Re: Paint Rock Chip Damage is Extreme

Since the early posts said the damage was through the plastic protector. I wonder if the problem is a defect in the metal, primer or paint and coming from underneath the paint.

A lot of cars have galvanized steel on the bottom.

I think if anyone can show it's under the plastic protector it is clearly a factory defect.

If there is "chips" in the plastic protector then it was exposed to something pretty harsh.

So is it under the plastic protector or punched through it?

I have the same damage on mine and after only 3 months of owning it. I took it back to the dealer and the guy in the body shop said it is a common problem and it's not covered under warranty. He told me that he has told the dealership to recommend the splash guards, but they didn't say anything to me when I bought it. I have since added them and the side steps. It seems to have stopped the problem

Re: Paint Rock Chip Damage is Extreme

I have had the Jeep splash guards (OE Jeep molded mud flaps) since I drove mine off the lot at 2 miles. I noticed the problem prior to having 1k miles and currently have 7k and its getting worse. The issue is all of the salt/cinders placed on the roads during the winter.

Re: Paint Rock Chip Damage is Extreme

This is not a paint issue, it's a design flaw. Stand near the side mirror and look back and you'll see 2 areas that protrude out: the bottom of the door and the plastic trim.

Why does Jeep put plastic protective film on the bottom of the rear door? Because the door + plastic trim are in the debris path of the front tires. In VT, they use a mix of 1/8" rocks/gravel + solid rock salt to treat secondary roads (the roads I drive on). This is proving no match for the plastic film that's on the door. I have ordered some Expel automotive film to try to protect the plastic trim on the front of the rear wheel well and below the rear door.

Short of a redesign, Jeep should just include more protective film in that area, especially if somebody (like myself) opts for the all weather (except for snow?) capability group....

I should add that my previous Jeep (01 GC) was driven on the same roads for 75k miles and showed no sign of this wear.

This started pretty much first day on gravel... with the genuine mud flaps (aka splash guards). I believe only side steps (aka running boards) will prevent it as Nerf or tube arrangements will still let stuff past.

Cheers,
Steve

Mike, I could not have said it better myself...you're exactly right! I wish Jeep would do something about it.

Re: Paint Rock Chip Damage is Extreme

It's amazing that the vehicle with "the most advanced 4wd system in its class" doesn't appear to be capable of driving off road w/out damaging the vehicle.

Re: Paint Rock Chip Damage is Extreme

I have 9K on my 2014 Limited. There isn't a single nick.

I've had OEM mud flaps on since the first week. But I don't think that is the reason it still looks good. I'm sure it helped some.

It's NOT a body design issue.

It is either bad batches of paint or a chemical reaction issue with the rust treatment they often put on lower panels. Such that when it is hit with sand or small stones it is chipping the "weak" paint away.

Or it's a reaction to chemicals used in your location.

They do use chemical on roads these days.

Re: Paint Rock Chip Damage is Extreme

My 2011 has 44k on it now, and there are a couple little nicks in this area which are IMHO typical for that mileage, nothing like thus.
