I've never not seen a car that snow and slush doesn't hang there. Anyways, that still doesn't make any sense...why is the front undamaged?

I forgot to address this.

3M is by far the largest supplier of this material in its raw form. They sell a LOT of raw products to manufacturers of basically everything...I would be shocked if it wasn't manufactured by 3M.

Almost all of the paint protection films you can buy, the raw material is from 3M...whatever brand they are marketed as.

Anyways...it doesn't matter. The point is the paint, cladding, and the plastic material are all different materials and would not be damaged by simple stone impacts in the same manner.

Re: Paint Rock Chip Damage is Extreme

Hey Morty...if you could post some pictures to help baqck me up here that would be great!!!
The issue for me is that Jeep is selling these vehicles with out mud flaps and the tires through up rocks and hit the underside of the rocker panels and the front of the wheel well on the rear wheels. There isn't a mark on the entire front of the vehicle only the sides which is odd for sure.

When I took it to the Jeep Dealership they also said they had never seen anything this bad before. I just drive on paved roads so unless they are using crushed granite for sand I have no idea what happened....but as I mentioned...I'm not alone in this kind of damage.

As Rotor stated: in a recent snow storm, everything is flung back on these areas.

Re: Paint Rock Chip Damage is Extreme

Not alone, but certainly not in the majority. Pictures are meaningless, we all believe the damage is there. What we have been repeatedly saying is that you must have come into some sort of incredibly destructive...something.

See, that proves our point. If the Jeep has poor quality paint or design that caused that type of damage under normal use in your area...don't you think your local Jeep dealer would have seen it on a ton of other JGCs...driven in the same places and winter weather as you?

Quote:

As it is on every vehicle.

Mudflaps are an option...saying Jeep is at fault because it was sold "without mudflaps" is like saying that any carmaker is at fault for rock chips on the front edge because they sell cars without front end bras, doesn't make any sense. Mudflaps are not a typical peice of OEM vehicle equipment, and if you want the protection of mudflaps, they are available. I personally would not want mudflaps on my Jeep.

You have your mudflaps now, I would have the Jeep repainted in those areas and move on with your life. Vehicles get damaged out on the road, the manufacturer can't be blamed for that.

Re: Paint Rock Chip Damage is Extreme

Using the same logic, then there was no reason for jeep to put the plastic protector on... Other then the fact they knew the area was getting blasted by road debris

Re: Paint Rock Chip Damage is Extreme

LOTS of cars have a piece of that 3M material in that location, my Lexus does...have you ever seen a Mercedes CLS up close? Theres a HUGE piece on the rear door on that car, it easily covers 1/4 of the door.

Look...if you drive over debris...that debris may damage the paint on the car...bottom line. If you drive behind a dump truck full of rocks...you might get rock chips and a cracked windshield, bottom line. You can't expect the manufacturer to make the vehicle impervious to damage from all manner of flying road debris.

Here's a picture of the 3M product applied in the same place on my Lexus, because the wheel well flares out here.

And my 2004 Mazda has it at the same place, driven on the same roads, and taken the same winter weather abuse for 7 years without even a scratch there.

Re: Paint Rock Chip Damage is Extreme

But see, so have a lot of the other Grand Cherokees in your area if the dealer was that shocked to see that.

I still contend the only possible explanation is that you came into contact with something unusual and destructive with this vehicle you didn't see with the Mazda, thats the only thing that makes any sense.

BLACKBERRY is on a distinguished road
Re: Paint Rock Chip Damage is Extreme

When the Jeep was originally bought in December, there hadn't been that many sold up here in Alberta, Canada where I live. At least I didn’t notice very many and you tend to look for them after you purchase a new vehicle.

There are quite a number on the road now....purchased after the winter season probably. So we'll see what the snow and sand/gravel brings this year as far as damage. I'm not disagreeing that I have damage that was caused by what was put on the road during the winter here.

All I'm trying to say is that it is obviously a huge concern for anyone that will be purchasing or driving a GC this winter without any protection. Without a doubt you will see a lot of damage and if you own a black or blackberry color it will be very noticeable.

The point that I’ll also make is that there is NO…ZIPPPOOO….ZERO…..NONE damage to the front of the vehicle. So even though I drive a freeway to work sometimes, there is nothing damaging the front of the vehicle. So the same stuff that damaged the sides didn’t come in contact with the front.

So that being said, all the damage occurred from regular paved road winter driving and was from the front tires throwing back whatever was on the road and hitting portions of the exposed painted surface. Point being and I don’t think that this can be argued, is that the front tires will throw whatever is on the road and it will damage the paint. On a car you may not have the same issue because it would be a different tread design. You may not see it on a white or light coloured GC but if you run your hands on that area there’s probably going to be some damage. A black or blackberry will show it and it’s really PO’d me because this vehicle has been taken care of from the day it was bought.

If more vehicles have this type of damage after this winter then it’s really something that is a design issue. All you need to do is look at what is exposed on the sides from the path of the tires.
You will have damage end of story……….

Also of note: Two of us have Blackberry Pearl GC’s that are complaining of this issue, nOT SURE OF THE OTHER COLOURS.
JEEP HAS DISCONTINUED BLACKBERRY IN 2012……..COINCIDENCE?

Re: Paint Rock Chip Damage is Extreme

I think you're reaching when you're saying everybody is going to experience what you've experienced. Plenty of WK2 owners have driven their vehicles in winter with no mudflaps and no damage already, so I don't see how you can tell us we're all going to have damage "end of story"

I stand by what I said, it is impossible for mere road debris to damage the paint, 3M film, and the grained black plastic in exactly the same way. You guys must have driven through something else that has damaged your Jeeps.
