Re: Paint Rock Chip Damage is Extreme

Blackberry is not alone with this issue...IMO, it is not chemical damage or paint he has run through. I have same color Overland and SAME issue. Looked at other used ones and see similar damage, some worse, some not as bad...hence the reason Jeep put this protective strip in front of rear wheels to try and minimize the damage occuring. They obviously found out that road debris will sandblast this whole area so they put on the protective strip. I have found if I buff polishing compound, then very fine scratch remover and then seal and wax that I get quite a bit of it out and looking much better NOT great but better.

Re: Paint Rock Chip Damage is Extreme

Photos would help. Is the plastic on yours also damaged like Blackberry's?

Re: Paint Rock Chip Damage is Extreme

I've had my Jeep for almost 5000 miles now and went through the recent northeast snowstorm with salt and road debris. With that said, I do not have that damage and recently ripped off the factory clear protection there and have replaced it with a piece with more coverage.

The factory one is puny compared to the one I replaced it with.

There are quite a number on the road now....purchased after the winter season probably. So we'll see what the snow and sand/gravel brings this year as far as damage. I'm not disagreeing that I have damage that was caused by what was put on the road during the winter here.

All I'm trying to say is that it is obviously a huge concern for anyone that will be purchasing or driving a GC this winter without any protection. Without a doubt you will see a lot of damage and if you own a black or blackberry color it will be very noticeable.

The point that I’ll also make is that there is NO…ZIPPPOOO….ZERO…..NONE damage to the front of the vehicle. So even though I drive a freeway to work sometimes, there is nothing damaging the front of the vehicle. So the same stuff that damaged the sides didn’t come in contact with the front.

So that being said, all the damage occurred from regular paved road winter driving and was from the front tires throwing back whatever was on the road and hitting portions of the exposed painted surface. Point being and I don’t think that this can be argued, is that the front tires will throw whatever is on the road and it will damage the paint. On a car you may not have the same issue because it would be a different tread design. You may not see it on a white or light coloured GC but if you run your hands on that area there’s probably going to be some damage. A black or blackberry will show it and it’s really PO’d me because this vehicle has been taken care of from the day it was bought.

If more vehicles have this type of damage after this winter then it’s really something that is a design issue. All you need to do is look at what is exposed on the sides from the path of the tires.
You will have damage end of story……….

Also of note: Two of us have Blackberry Pearl GC’s that are complaining of this issue, nOT SURE OF THE OTHER COLOURS.
JEEP HAS DISCONTINUED BLACKBERRY IN 2012……..COINCIDENCE?
If it was the case that the blackberry paint is more prone to chipping vs the other colors your front bumper and hood would surely be torn up as well from other motorists throwing up gravel, sand, salt, etc. Damage will always be more noticable on dark colors vs silver or white. That being said, mine still has no damage even with 305/60/18 terra grapplers and 18 x 9.5 wheels and my tires stick out over an inch from the wheel wells.

Re: Paint Rock Chip Damage is Extreme

Well...I consider it to be more than extreme. I have ONLY 300 miles on my 2012, and after a round trip 100 miles to my house in Big Bear Lake and back it looks like someone took a cheese grater to the plastic trim and the paint is badly pitted along the bottoms of both doors along both sides of the vehicle. Obviously from the gravel on the snow covered roads, but this is not the kind of damage I'd expect to see. I've been driving my AWD Pacifica up there for 8 years...still looks like new. The service department hasn't seen anything like it, and they're trying to get Jeep to have it repainted. I also stopped by the parts department and bought mudflaps. I wish I'd have seen this thread a week ago when I bought it.

The clear vinyl is damaged not covered in paint.
The dealership used a buffing compound and couldn't do anything with it.
If you can stick your finger nail into a hole would that not be a chip?
Rock chips are holes or chips.
Paint or concrete would stay flush or create bumps.

Since I've been to the dealership and they acknowledge that it's rock damage from 3 months of winter driving then that's what it is!

Obviously Jeep didn't think that Mud Flaps should be standard equipment....they missed the boat on that one and I have a warranty claim in.

If 3 other members are expressing that they have the same problem wouldn't that point to these GC's having an issue?
He's not crazy These are rock chips...100%...same thing all along the bottom of the doors on both sides, including the plastic. Only 300 miles on the vehicle.

Ditto. Also did the first 12" of the hood, the headlights and door sills with 3M film. Seems to be doing the trick.

Re: Paint Rock Chip Damage is Extreme

That just doesn't make any sense that the clear bra material would be pitted in exactly the same way as the paint...
