Panoroof shade not opening

So a few months ago, just before winter, the panoroof shade started acting on me, sometimes it wouldn't close, sometimes it wouldn't open but after a few hours it would work. The thing went on for a while and then winter arrived, and boy this was a long winter!

When the good weather finally came back so did the shade issues, until one day a few weeks ago when the shade simply would not open. Mind you, the sunroof itself has never stopped working. So I take the Jeep to the dealer and they have it there all day to troubleshoot by an electrician. They charge me 200 dollars for the diagnosis which is they didn't find anything wrong per se but the overhead console must be replaced. They quoted the part for almost 1,200 dollars plus 200 or 300 for installation. In case you find the prices too high, this is Canada where everything is more expensive.

Bottom line, the dealer wants me to shell 1,500 bucks plus taxes to fix something they didn't find wrong to begin with. I found the part in US to cost around 500. Should I juts order it from stateside or is there any other advice you guys have?

This is why everyone should purchase the Jeep maxicare lifetime warranty. I have found that there are so many expensive issues waiting to revel themselves and they will cost you BIG $$$. I purchased my "guarantee" from Ziegler and have no regrets what-so-ever! The air suspension alone can set you back thousands.

It looks as though sunroof issues do not generate a lot of love around here. Posts regarding sunroof problems go usually unanswered, which I guess is a good thing, as I assume lack of interest equals lack of problems. Either that or most folks do not have sunroof equipped Jeeps.

I was lucky to have at least gotten a response not exactly helpful but one cannot expect everybody to know that maxicare warranties are not available outside the US.

Anyway, the part has been replaced and I ended up paying almost 1600 because it wasn't covered by the Chrysler extended warranty.

Re: Panoroof shade not opening

I don't think the lack of replies are lack of interest. I would probably say it is more lack of knowledge in how the systems work. I have done automotive electronics for 20 years. Ranging from radio installs, to remote start installs, to now I install DUI breathalyzers. Even some certified mechanics look at interior electronics like they are magic. I get calls from mechanics all of the time because they don't understand how a breathalyzer works or what I did to make a car not start. They sometimes have to reverse what I did so they can service the car. They just seem baffled.

With that said I would guess the switch in the roof console went bad. More than likely they cannot order just a replacement switch. They probably have to order the whole console. Which is dumb. The system works like a window system. There are 3 parts; the switch, the wire between the switch and the motor, and the motor. You push the switch and it tells the motor to run it's predetermined time or until it sees X amount of resistance. Since they only replaced the console that tells me there was no wire short and the motor wasn't bad.
