Passenger side front door window double cracks - on its own?

Apparently my passenger side front door window cracked while parked due to some kind of defect, or the heat of the sun? I've got two hairline cracks that go from the very top to the very bottom of the glass with no point of impact marks (besides its hard to image an impact that creates two almost identical cracks that are 10" apart). The best thing I can come up with is that maybe there was too much pressure on the glass from the electric window motor pushing the window up too far, and maybe that in combination with being in 90 degree heat? Or maybe the glass just had some sort of defect in it.

Either way, I found a few other links from people that report almost the same exact thing, and oddly enough also on the passenger side front door window.

I wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem, or have any insight as to what may have happened?

And the other two reports of this:

Photo for the curious:

Anyone have any suggestions on how two cracks like this could appear overnight while parked?

I've got an appointment at the dealer Monday, going to try my best to convince them it's some sort of defect.

Yea, it really is... the window wasn't being operated when it cracked (happened while parked ), and I'm scared to roll it down with the cracks in there, so I can't really answer your question!

Its wild though, if you look at the first link I posted in the first post, that guys pictures look almost identical. Double cracks from top to bottom on the same exact window.

I'm just going to print out those photos and threads and take them to the dealer with me

Re: Passenger side front door window double cracks - on its own?

my 2011 had the windshield crack about 1 month after we got it... just driving down the road, no rock or anything - just a loud POP.. and there it was.

I was first going to say a break in.. but put stress on those windows and the spiderweb and crumble... that is very strange

Hmm was thinking that too about stressed or faulty glass

Thread revival.

Did jeep cover your cracked window?

Driving home today my passenger side window cracked. I've only been driving about 20 years and this is the first side window I've ever had crack.

I'm hoping Jeep will cover it and has one in stock or if not some local glass company have one as I have a family trip this Wednesday I hope to have it fixed before.

Re: Passenger side front door window double cracks - on its own?

I was able to get my dealer to cover it, however they did it as a "one time favor" for a new customer. I won't get into the details about how long it took and the pain I went through to get the work actually done. But in the end I guess it saved around $500 ( Can't remember the exact invoice amount, but it was definitely higher than I would have expected )

One thing I'm not clear about though, is aren't these tempered glass side windows? If it's from an impact wouldn't you always get either a circle type pattern, or a complete shatter into a thousand little pebbles? The way that all of the pictures I've seen of the side window cracks definitely make it look like stress from the top or bottom, or a pinching type stress is causing the crack.

Not sure what model GC you have but some of them have acoustic glass on the side windows, so its two layers of glass with plastic or something in the middle so they don't turn to a million pebbles like the regular glass. I think it started out as the summit front door windows in 2014 and then added the back door windows in 2015 or something like that. maybe they all have them now I don't remember but initially I think only certain ones got it

Ahh good point, mine is just the base Altitude '14 ... Don't think they have the sound dampening glass.

Thought I read somewhere that all GC's got the acoustic glass in 2014 or 15.

Roll the window down and you should be able to see the two layers.

I stopped by my dealer and they were not even going to try. They took one look and didn't even attempt to look into a warranty issue. They were happy to give me a price quote of a new OEM window for the tune of $5?? dollars plus install and they still had to order it. Thought that was a crazy price. Called up my local glass shop and they had an aftermarket glass in stock and with install was $230. I took that deal.

I have a 15 Overland. I ended up going with my local glass shop as it was a lot cheaper than my dealer.
