After I open the door does not matter which one I here a pop threw the speakers this has happened three times now not all the time. Anyone have any ideas.
You have an amplifier grounding problem. Prolly loose somewhere. Get the amplifier schematic, find the ground(s) and follow them back to where they are physically connected to the chassis. Is the bolt tight on the connector? Since it passed QC at the factory and has recently started occurring, the culprit might be an open circuit at a connector terminal in that ground circuit. Look at the ground wire going into the back of the connector(s) to see if it is loose or inside the connector to see if a blade is bent over. Tug on the suckers, it won't hurt the ones properly attached.
OR take it to the dealer and TELL them the problem and ask them to fix it.
The amplifier has stored power and discharges during power off. However, since the ground wire has a partially open circuit, the amplifier discharges through the speakers. I wanna say the connection is loose because a completely open ground circuit would cause more problems. Google and you'll find this is a common amplifier installation problem.
Just throwing an idea out there... could this be to do with the disconnection of a Bluetooth device? Maybe do some testing without any connected devices to confirm it's not the case?
I agree it sounds like the amp dumping into the speakers though. Does it coincide with the system shutting down, or is it running during and after the spurious noise?
Holy hell, what a nightmare.
I would say too all you guys with these type problems, try to sit in the vehicle for 1-3 minutes after you shut off the power (engine, lights & radio) to see if the amp (or whatever) bleeds the power off slowly and you don't get a pop or reboot. Or shut off the engine and wait for the delay timer to expire and wait a few.
It won't fix the problem but will help isolate it.
ok now to isolate your problem. F71 is the fuse for the Audio Amplifier. The fuse block cover in the engine bay has a legend that tell one where the fuse is located in the fuse block. There should be a yellow fuse puller in there too. If not, then used a pair of needle nose pliers. Pull it, then start the vehicle and do whatever you do to get the speakers to pop. If the speakers don't pop with this fuse pulled, then it is something with the amplifier.
If amp is the culprit, get yourself the JGC electrical manual and find where the gnd circuit(s) are leading away from the amplifier and check to ensure they are making good connections to ground.
paradiso, 14summithemi posted in another thread if you signup with autozone it will allow you to view shop manual drawings, so try that and find the harness drawings for the radio & amp. You'll also wanna get the circuit diagram or at least the block diagram for the connectors that list the terminal numbers and most important, wire colors. If you don't have one, pick up a voltage meter that reads OHMS and has leads (big box hardware stores have wide assortment). Not the one that looks like a pencil and no leads. Get a few alligator clip jumpers too so you can check the ohms (continuity) for the ground circuit before jacking with it and afterwards. The reading should be <= 0.1-5 ohms if you have good continuity but the "open" circuit in the ground will be in the 1000's. Good luck guy and let us know what you find.
I wanted to see the amp in back and look at the wiring and connectors. All the wires and connectors looked fine nothing stood out. I pulled the amp fuse under the hood and reinstalled and did the same with the three amp connectors. I couldn't see where the amp ground connections are as they just went into a larger wire bundle and went out of site. Since doing those things I have not been able to replicate the pop. It did it twice earlier today both times were shortly after opening a door and getting into the Jeep.
Yes that's the left quarter area. To access the amp you have to remove the spare tire and the plastic surround. You don't have to remove any of the interior plastic panels. It's easy actually. I'm not convinced I fixed the problem, but time will tell.
I will say this though, the new Jeeps have to go through some growing pains after they are new. For example my 2014 Summit. It was flawless, but very early on after buying it new it did do a couple weird electrical things that never did happen again. My HA has 400 some miles on it and is only two weeks old. I'll give t time and see what happens. Jut for grins you should get back to the amp and pull the three connectors, take a look at them, jiggle the wires, and put them back and see if it still pops. Also, you don't have to completely remove the spare tire surround, just lift the rear most section and you should be able to access the amp connectors.
See what happens.
Thank you, I'll be trying this tomorrow. My 2014 was the Overland. I can agree it does settle down over time. My 2015 summitt only has 1500 miles so we shall see
One more question, so does your Jeep literally do this every single time you open a door or is it a once in a while thing? So in other words, if you mess with the amp and wiring and you don't get a pop right away afterwards then we know it may have just been a simple connection issue at the amp. Keep us posted.
I also have the pop. It has happened two times in the first 600 miles on the vehicle. I pulled the F71 fuse and will monkey with the connectors in the back as well if I still get the noise.
I noticed two grounds directly below the fuse box. I'd hope there are more than two grounds in the vehicle, but those two so close to the fuse panel could be it.
I looked over all the grounds I could see under the hood and all were very clean and tight. Pop has still not occurred since earlier in the day yesterday and I have been purposely getting in and out of my car often to check.
Well mine still pops after pulling the monkey wires on the AMP. I did notice when the AMP is unplugged the pop is 99% gone. I can just barely hear it in one of the door speakers.
I randomly got two pops today. First time I have heard them since replying to this post while back. Jeep has just been sitting in my garage last driven yesterday around noon. First pop was during lift gate opening, then another when I opened drivers side rear door. I'm at 1300 miles now and only recall hearing these pops a couple times since buying it new, so it's a very rare occurrence. I wouldn't even bother taking it to a dealer, but even if I did it's not like you can replicate it so it would be a waste of time.
Any update from the others with this issue?
Mine still pops, doors, hatch etc trigger it. I can sit in the truck wait for the dash to shut off and then open a door it pops. Seems to pop with the dash booting or coming on.
I know some have recommended it's a ground issue, but I would be curious to see what would happen if you simply swapped out the amp. just curious, since yours does it all the time and is easily replicated, why haven't you gone to the dealership? Should be a pretty easy fix in that case. Then we would all know what the issue is as well
I will bring up the amp issue during my next visit to the dealer. Last fall when I had them look at it they were basically "No idea" and told a software update may come out to address it.
Any updates on this? If not I urge all of you to contact your certified service center to resolve the problem. As a FCA technician I speak from experience when I say FCA will not issue any updates unless the issue is voiced. I currently have a 2015 Grand Cherokee Summit that has the same issues. We are trying to resolve the problem with the engineers, but its not being considered a priority. We need all of your help! please bring this to the attention of your service center. You need to get them to send out technical assistance cases (star case) so the problem is known.
Mine still does every once in a while. It's not enough to get me into a dealer, but I will mention it during my first service appointment.
It's not like we can simply get our hands on any parts we want, but I wonder if swapping amps would take care of it.
I actually heard my speaker pop from outside the car with all the doors closed once. I was in the garage and shortly after closing all the doors I heard a weird pop sound. Then it dawned on me it was the Jeep lol. Grrreeaaattt lol
I want to update this thread with some info. So my Grand Cherokee is at the dealer right now for the recalls and a couple other things I wanted addressed. Since it was in I figured what the heck I will tell them the rear speaker pops occasionally after opening or closing a door. Even though I assumed the speaker would not pop for the tech since it's very intermittent, to my surprise they said it did!! He said they will be replacing the amp. I get the Jeep back Friday or Saturday and will definitely report back if that fixes the problem.
Got my Jeep back today. They are waiting for the amp to come in as he said it was back ordered, but thinks his system shows it in transit. Either way I wanted to get my Jeep back so whenever the amp arrives I'll take it back and have them swap it out which shouldn't take long. Here is what the paper work says was found:
