Power Liftgate Motor mount broke!

Has anyone had the upper mount for the power liftgate snap off?

I went to open the liftgate yesterday and heard a snap then a grinding noise as the cylinder continued to extend without lifting the rear gate. It pulled all the wiring harness out so I'm hoping that there was plenty of slack in the wiring and it didn't tear anything. Upon inspection I noticed that the upper mounting bolt had sheared off. Seemed like a really small bolt to be holding all that mass!

Re: Power Liftgate Motor mount broke!

Unfortunately Sir, yes mine has just sheared off too also ripping out the wiring harness. I too hope there was enough slack not to have done damage to the wires. I am not happy as mine came crashing down as I was unloading my beautiful rifle. I'm glad the tailgate hit my head and not the rifle since my head will heal up. I am headed to the dealer tomorrow to complain. Also, my 5.7 L V8 is smoking badly, mostly on start up but also on some runs.

Where they able to drill out the sheared off bolt without causing more damage to your car?

Re: Power Liftgate Motor mount broke!

So the update... my power liftgate motor mount is now fixed. They had to have the car for three days because they could not remove the broken bolt from the frame of the car. Due to the tight space, they could not drill it. In the end, they had to remove the interior trim of the cargo space and drill through the whole frame of the car to get it out. I was not overly pleased with the finished job. The trim seems to rattle, is somewhat loose and there are oily finger prints on the head lining. At least though my tailgate now lifts again.

I was asking why they could not spot weld a small nut on the broken bolt to spin it out or even some epoxy to hold a small nut to unwind it. They said that was a good idea but obviously had already done it their way.

Oh well, my pristine Jeep is now not quite so pristine anymore! :-(

Just to be clear your rear gate was all the way up and all of a suden came crashing down while you were unloading items from your rear compartment?

If it was all the way up and it just came crashing down, imagine if a child was standing right under or sitting on your rear bumper and the liftgate came down crashing on this child. I would definately be contacting some legal help in that event.

If it was on it's way up, then I am curios (have not checked) if the owner's manual states you should way until the gate is all the way up and stopped until you aproach to unload.

If it wasn't all the way up, it was pretty close to fully up. I used to often reach in whilst it was still lifting if I was just grabbing something quickly. When it fell on me, it was not the whole weight of the gate since it has the spring on the other side but that spring probably only took off about half the weight. Regardless, it knocked my head to the side and pushed me into the cargo space when it fell. Definitely a good point that it could do a lot more damage if it was a child. I'm hoping these are isolated cases but I agree with the other contributor that it is quite a small bolt to be holding this amount of weight.
