Power lock doesn't work if the passenger door is open. Is this by design?

I have a 2016 WK2 where the power lock on the driver's door does not operate if the passenger door is open.

Is this by design, or is it a malfunction?

If it's by design, it's the height of stupidity as it causes an incredible security hazard. If this is the case, is there an easy way to restore proper functionality?

I checked yesterday several times and I could always lock the doors using the lock button on the driver's door with the passenger's door open. I have a 2016 GC Summit.

Thank you for checking. I'm relieved to hear your results. It's a heck of a lot easier to resolve this if it's a malfunction as opposed to if it's by design.
