pump running after engine off

I noticed for the first time today that after I shut off the engine a pump that sounds like the windshield washer pump kept running. It has what seems like small coolant lines attached. I left it for a few minutes and it never shut off so I unplugged it. Don't feel like having a dead battery in the morning. I attached a picture I found online. I was soaked from snowy rain after I finally got it unplugged and didn't really feel like taking my own picture. I was reading over at a Cherokee forum about someone having the same issue with the 3.2 Pentastar. Someone mentioned that it could be pumping coolant to evenly cool the engine and said that some VW's and BMW's do that and it automatically shut off. So im not sure if thats the case and if anyone knows if this is normal I'd appreciate the help.

Thanks
Will

Yes its normal.. my last vehicle (2013 Dodge Dart) did the same thing. Sometimes it would run for ten minutes, sometimes it wouldn't run at all. It just circulates coolant when temps are high for added/even cooling. If you let the vehicle idle for a little before you shut it off the pump probably won't turn on at all.

I too was confused by this when I first heard it haha. I had no idea they were doing it in the new GC's though! Pretty neat feature if you ask me.

Next time you drive, let it idle for about 45sec to a minute and see if it turns on. Hope this helps!!

Thanks for the replay upon closer inspection it has only one line that is labled vacuum brake(see attached pics) so it maybe a vacuum pump of some sort. It hasn't done it since Friday. When I go for my first oil change I'll inquire and post what they say. Also forgot to add when I checked it about and hour later I started the engine it wouldn't idle below 1,000 rpm the ESC light was on and brakes peddle was mushy. I shut off the engine then restart and all has been fine. Weird stuff. Again thanks for the reply.
