Rats!

So I started my Jeep for a run to the store for some last minute goodies...

When I tapped the brake pedal to start the engine, there was no travel in the pedal. Started the engine, put it into reverse and discovered I had no brakes.

Opened the hood for a look and found a mass of stuffing-like material above the left strut and a hole in a hose by the master cylinder.

Apparently I have a rat issue to deal with, but does anyone know what the affected hose is for? It comes out of the firewall behind the master cylinder and wraps around the front of the (3.0L Diesel) engine to the passenger side under the engine cowling. It's dry, so I assume it's a vacuum or sensing line...

Maybe vacum to brake booster? Im not entirely familiar with diesel though.

Squirrels will do stuff like this also. They are into the big fluff nests like that. See if there are babies in there. How long has it been since you drove it last.

Re: Rats!

This was an overnight job - I had used the Jeep on the day before. No babies (or droppings for that matter). Caught the dirty (wood)rat last night with a baited trap placed under the vehicle. We're still trying to figure out where he got all that stuffing...

I'm hoping I can patch the hose with some copper tubing...

Look under your seats. (I hope not.)
