Rear heated seats - Any Problems?

Took some buddies up to Tahoe over the weekend. They used the rear heated Seats and said the heat turned off. When they tried to turn the heat back on the switch light blinks then turns off again. Is this how the seats are designed to work? The seats had been off for about an hour before they tried to use them again but would not turn back on.

Re: Rear heated seats - Any Problems?

i don't think heated seats are made to run all the time but more to kill the chill of the seat and warm up da bum until the cabin temp normalizes.

Re: Rear heated seats - Any Problems?

Sounds like they hit max temp. Your buddies must be some....

Just kidding. I have not had anyone in my back seat.

Re: Rear heated seats - Any Problems?

My kids say that mine shuts off too when it gets very hot. The light blinks until it cools down and then comes on again. I rode in the back and interestingly, those seats get hotter than the front ones do and I think the front get too hot on high and not hot enough on low.

Re: Rear heated seats - Any Problems?

Mine seem to work fine; haven't had anybody back there for extended periods. My parents like for me to drive when they join my wife and I for a dinner out since every seat in the GC is heated.

Re: Rear heated seats - Any Problems?

The manual says this for the front heated seats:

Quote:
NOTE: Once a heat setting is selected, heat will be felt within two to five minutes.

When the HIGH-level setting is selected, the heater will provide a boosted heat level during the first four minutes of operation. Then, the heat output will drop to the
normal HIGH-level. If the HIGH-level setting is selected, the system will automatically switch to LOW-level after a maximum of 45 minutes of continuous operation. At that
time, the number of illuminated LEDs changes from two to one, indicating the change. The LOW-level setting will turn OFF automatically after a maximum of 55 minutes.
And this for the rear heated seats:

Quote:

When the HIGH-level setting is selected, the heater will provide a boosted heat level during the first four minutes of operation. Then, the heat output will drop to the

I think it's odd that the two timers are reversed between the front and rear seats, 45 minutes for high and 55 minutes for low for the front and 55 minutes for high and 45 minutes for low for the rear, but maybe one of them is a typo. It doesn't say anything about automatic shutoff in case of being too hot, just that it's timed. It does have this warning:

Quote:
Do not place anything on the seat that insulates against heat, such as a blanket or cushion. This may cause the seat heater to overheat. Sitting in a seat that has been over heated could cause serious burns due to the increased surface temperature of the seat.
This warning makes it seem like it doesn't have any built-in protection against overheating. I got all of this from the fourth edition of the 2011 Grand Cherokee Owner's Manual that I downloaded from the www.jeep.com web site a couple of days go.

Re: Rear heated seats - Any Problems?

Thank you for the the information. FYI - I checked my rear seat heaters last night and they did turn on again. My passengers must have exceeded the timers and the seats shut off automatically. My thought is the only way to reset the timer is to turn off the vehicle. Im happy with this answer. Thanks

Re: Rear heated seats - Any Problems?

I am having a similar issue with my driver seat. It shuts off after 10 minutes, and I am unable to turn it back on. It doesn't cycle from high to low like the manual indicates. Better take it in and have it looked at....

Thats too funny..

This thread reminded me of a time when the seat heater on a buddy's X5 caught on fire and burnt the driver's seat. Luckily he got out in time just when he started to smell something cooking, he though his balls were on fire.
