My shocks and shock mounts were replaced yesterday. There is no clunk above 30mph on a smooth street. Below 30mph on a rough street there is a side to side clunk that is still audible and kind of harsh feeling. Maybe it's the new shock mounts breaking in? The shock mounts weren't replaced when they installed they the first set of AE's (which was done at a Dodge dealership). This second pair of AE's were fully replaced (shock mounts and shocks). The guy in service department yesterday said he hoped this fixed the noise, if not he'd see me in a couple of weeks. I guess he's pretty used to this shock problem LOL.

Re: Rearend or rear suspension clunk/creak

I never had any clunk sounds over 20 miles. So if you still have the sound under 20 miles I think still not fixed.
I am glad I change my car.

Only thing that keeps me from trading is one, I love the styling of the my12's but the 14 has grown on me. I keep being optimistic about the shocks. I really do love my12.

Re: Rearend or rear suspension clunk/creak

This may be stupid.. but i climbed under mine last night and can't see what shock mounts you are talking about? the lowers are bolted through the control arm.. upper mount is just a flat plate that looks like it is bolted straight into the frame. Is it something more obvious if i pull them out? Just curious cause its starting to be the only thing i hear now.. wish i never noticed

I cant remember the members name, but one member posted pics of the shocks and shock mounts in a good state and pics after they were shot. I'm not sure of the location myself. I would also too like to see a pic from Watchers78. LOL I didn't notice it until some friends were riding in the backseat and they said "what the hell is that noise"... I had never heard because I'm always up front with music on haha.

Re: Rearend or rear suspension clunk/creak

This update is long overdue after originally starting this tread. Long story short on our issue, it was a bad batch of shocks. They replaced the rear passenger shock 3 times, along with a number of other suspension components, before it was resolved. We figured there was no way it was the shock after multiple replacements, but it was. What finally fixed the issue was the dealer took a rear shock off of another Overland on their lot that the GM of the dealership had been driving. Sure enough, that did the trick and we haven't had a problem since. Supposedly at some point Jeep changed their shock supplier and the shocks were in fact the issue.

I was about to go the route of arbitration with Chrysler to have the vehicle replaced. There is no way you should have to be driving a $40k vehicle with such an annoying issue.

Re: Rearend or rear suspension clunk/creak

Same issue with a new 2013 limited v6 with tow package. The car sounds like a coal wagon over any slight crack or bump in the road. Took to dealer and they replaced the rear shocks under the TSB. This reduced the noise for awhile but now it's back and it's maddening. $40k for this? Thinking about replacing the shocks with Bilstein or other HQ brand but afraid to spend the money on something that might not work. I could care less about the tow package or self leveling shocks, it just happened to be on the car the way the dealer ordered it. Has anyone gone ahead and just bought new rear shocks other than the stock versions? Can the self leveling be disabled?

I disable them by getting my gc to the jeep dealer a d giving it as a trade in for a brand new 4x4 overland with quadralift and quadra trac. No more problems with the rear shock mounts. The way the shocks work is they pump themself to handle the load . there is no system or air.

If you reach your hand up by the plate you saw-(which I WISH was bolted to the frame)-and feel above it, you will feel a space. The space is there because the outer portion of that plate is not in direct contact with anything. That was redundant. Anyway, I think that plate may flex from torque. Out of desperation, I packed as much lithium grease as possible into that space. I also put some into the plastic part which the top of the joist cover attaches to--and I put in as much as I could but I did not put anything on the rod of the shock. After doing this, the squeak stopped and thus far has not returned. We will see how long that works. It's been about 2 months now and doing ok. I am a perfectionist and a very NEAT person so globbing grease all over the place is against my morals and ethics. However, it was either that or I was going to take a sledge hammer and beat the Jeep to death. This has been THE most infuriating situation I have ever dealt with in regards to a vehicle. It's not some horrific problem but it's annoying as hell. The fact that you pay a ton of money for the vehicle combined with Chrysler/Jeep dicking around with a "well lets try this or lets try that" attitude is ludicrous. I mean-an American car company--the same America that can drop a smart bomb on the speaker at a McDonalds Drive thru--can't fix squeaky shocks for years. It's just PATHETIC! How incompetent do you have to be to get a job there? As Jed Clampett used to say "Pitiful, just pitiful". I respectfully salute their stupidity!
