There was a post somewhere in here ( prolly the Aussie thread ) that they where manaf by a company called zf or ze or zsomethingorother sorry for not remembering been a while since I lost my problem summit and was involved.

Ps the same shocks were used in a 2006 Mercedes recall.

Re: Rearend or rear suspension clunk/creak

SUBJECT:
Rattle And/Or Clunk Noise From Rear Of The Vehicle Equipped With Load Leveling
Suspension.

2013 JGC Laredo X W/Tow Package 2500+Kms.

Took my JGC into the dealer today and had both rear shocks changed as per TSB# 17-005-13.

New replacement rear shocks part# 68069680AE.
Original shocks that came off Part# 68039560AA.

Now my complaint was as the TSB referred to, Clunk and or rattle heard at 10-15 mph
In my case more of a clunking. Which is quiet......for now!

I asked to take the old shocks home, As most of the talk on these shocks has been about the upper mounting bracket. I was hoping to have a hands on look at the them and all looks normal.

But what I did find was one shock acted as I thought a shock should, Springy, hard to collapse, normal. But the other one would not move at all, it was hard as a rock.

My two cents on my clunking problem:
What if that one self leveling shock pumped itself up for what ever reason (not that I ever had any heavy weight in the back and or towed anything) and never released that pressure.
Now you would have a very hard shock with possibly next to no travel and maybe just maybe that is what all this clunking is about???

Keep us up to date Norm. I hope it stays fixed. Out of the total of 8 rear shocks placed upon my chariot of rattle, 3 of them broke and then they really rattled. Please keep us posted. It would be wonderful to have a lasting solution. May the Force be with you!

BTW-I bought my wife a 2012 Jeep Compass at the end of 2011.It doesn't rattle! It just squeaks Again-how hard can it be to make shocks and suspensions that don't squeak???? Jeep needs to "man up"!

So the next day my dealer service adviser calls and tells me that TSB 17-005-13 is no longer valid for my JGC.
As its no longer in the system and that Chrysler does not want to cover the parts and labour for those shocks.

(At the time, their Dealer Direct was intermittently down.
So I show them a correct copy/code of that TSB, off the net, on my phone which they used).

He also went on tell me that Chrysler is now saying that the clunking and or rattling noise is a normal operation of those shocks.
And that there is now a note from Chrysler not to change the shocks due to that noise.

I told him that one shock had next to no travel and that if its not covered under a TSB then cover it under warranty.
There is/was a problem with those shocks and that it was a very unsafe way to be operating a vehicle.

Will update if they get back to me!

You know that is just typical! Of course a 40K car is supposed to clunk--what the hell was I thinking???? "Normal" = "we don't know how to fix it" This is exactly why I was hesitant to buy a Chrysler product. They are the same crappy car maker that they were going back into the 60"s. Outward styling and engine sizes-always exceptional. Long term dependability and trained service techs to fix them-crap!! I wonder if we could start a class action lawsuit? Not after money but I would like to irritate the hell out of them and cost them some money just like they've done to us. This is really pathetic. I bet consumers report would like to know about this situation. I think I will find out.

Re: Rearend or rear suspension clunk/creak

Well I just posted a complaint on the NHTSA website...highlighting our broken shocks as a safety issue. We'll see if they make Chrysler man up!

Re: Rearend or rear suspension clunk/creak

I have a 2011 Jeep..... Mine didn't start making the noise till I hit 27000 miles. I had both rear shocks replaced under warranty with 68069675-AD. The noise was eliminated and it has been dead quiet for the last 4000 miles.

IF YOU HAVE THE ISSUE FOR SURE REPLACE BOTH REAR SHOCKS AT THE SAME TIME.

Re: Rearend or rear suspension clunk/creak

2014 3.6 Limited with tow package here. I have the clunking noise as well. Took some of my car enthusiast co-workers out for lunch and we all agreed it was coming from the rear suspension. Went to the trusty forum to find this thread, not very promising. But I am going to take the car in to have it checked out. The sound is just like my friend had in his Mazda Speed 3, we replaced his shocks and the noise was gone... I'll report back here after my visit to the dealer later this week.

Re: Rearend or rear suspension clunk/creak

Man I hate that for you. It should fill you with great confidence that their engineers have not corrected this in 4 model years. Don't let them tell you that it's normal operational noise--that's just a corporate way of saying "We don't know how to fix it and will you please go away." I sent a complaint to the NTSC finally. Wether they will do anything, I have no clue. Good luck!

Re: Rearend or rear suspension clunk/creak

I have a JGC 2012 with tow package & load leveling shocks.
Had a bad clunk. took it to dealer and had shocks replaced in Aug. with the AE version.
Clunk gone for about a month. Now its back. Is ther a newer shock than the AE version? Whats next?
