It also looks like there is a bump/cavity on the cap. maybe the tip of the shock shaft is tapping against it. Just a guess.

Re: Rearend or rear suspension clunk/creak

I had the tsb done, the Jeep was perfect for 2 weeks and guess what... There's a clunking noise from the rear shocks again!

I called the dealer and scheduled an appointment for next week. Let's see what they say it is this time.

If we were to buy regular shocks from the non SLS Jeep, would they bolt in? Is the mount part of the shock? I haven't been able to find an answer. I would be more than happy to go to a regular shock and get rid of this SLS crap to have a smooth quiet ride again. I love my Jeep but I can't stand the noise. It eats at me every minute that I'm driving- and I drive a lot! 16k miles in 9 months.

Re: Rearend or rear suspension clunk/creak

All I can tell you is that I have had over 2000 quiet miles since removing the metal cap. I think the combination of the inside part of the mount hanging out in space where you can stick your finger between the mount and the body and a loose metal cover with a zit in the middle of it allows enough movement to pivot inside and outside. Since it sticks up and pivots it can torque the piston rod in the shock and eventually break a seal. If you look at the TSB on their latest fix (ha ha) you can see that the top of the piston rod is well below the top of the mount so in theory (and we know with Chrysler logic is shaky) it should be unlikely that it would punch into the body. And as you all know, we grasp at every straw of hope and it is possible I could have the shock punch through the body and put a grease spot on the headliner. :-)

Re: Rearend or rear suspension clunk/creak

I just took delivery on a 2014 GC 5.2L Overland W/Tow pkg. The first thing I noticed was the "clunk" in the rear when going over small bumps at low speed. The new GC goes in to the dealer next week for its first visit at 700 miles to fix the "clunk". From what I'm reading here there are several possibilities; replace the shocks, implement the TSB on the rubber bushing on top of the shock mount, remove the metal cover on the top shock mount or as a last resort change the shocks to standard non-load leveling. any other advise? Thanks for everyone's insight on this.

Re: Rearend or rear suspension clunk/creak

Nope, RWD with 5.7L, tow pkg with self leveling shocks. It seems to be the norm that the shocks and or mounts are the problem. If the shocks and mounts are replaced does it stay fixed? If worse comes to worse can I just replace the rear shocks with standard non-leveling?

Re: Rearend or rear suspension clunk/creak

I'm afraid I have to plead ignorance to the self leveling shocks. Someone looked a little while ago and could not find an aftermarket shock yet. I would assume your Jeep is set up with the same upper shock mounts--at least the connector from the body that attaches to the shock. Personally, I think it is instrumental in the whole damn thing. At this point you're stuck with playing the dealer game. I would go for the TSB fix at this point. You might tell them you've had friends who had it done but it didn't last (don't tell them from where) and see what happens. The fix was designed for the self leveling shocks specifically so maybe you will get lucky. I would ask them exactly what was making the noise..since they're fixing it they should know what they are fixing. Let me know what they say--I'll be real curious. Good luck!

Please let us know what happens after the dealer visit. It seems there are a lot of us that are having the same problem. Watcher58 seems to be knowledgeable on the issue and we thank you for that. If the metal cap may be the culprit then It should be no big deal to simply loosen the bracket, compress the shock and remove the metal cap and see what happens. It couldn't be any worse that what it is. Another question, do all jeeps WK-2's have the load leveling shocks regardless whether they have the tow package? If not then is there an OEM non-load leveling shock available? Does anyone know the part number? We are all ears here!

Those little bushings don't help anything because that friggin top cap is over them.
Get rid of those little bastards and you might see results. This crap has gone on for 4 model years. Their best solution-two rubber bushings and it still makes noise. Process of elimination--whats left? That end cover. I use to fix mine for a while by packing grease above the top of the body mount. I didn't know why it helped then but now I do--it had just enough thickness to to keep the cover from bouncing around so much and rattling if you will. Anyway that's my attempt to stop the suffering

Thanks Watcher, I'll take a look at it this weekend and see what gives. Removing the cap shouldn't be that big of an issue. I'm thinking if worse comes to worse I'll replace the rears with standard GC rear shocks and see if that fixes it. I don't pull a trailer so the self-leveling shocks are not that big a deal to me. I wonder if the springs will also need to be changed to match the shocks, that would be a real job. I hate taking it back to the stealership if I don't have to.
