Re: Rearend or rear suspension clunk/creak

I have this same problem with my 14 Overland. I've noticed the clunking/thud noise gets progressively worse as I raise the air suspension height. It's to the point that driving in ORII setting is virtually impossible. It sounds as if somebody is throwing a baseball at 90mph at my car every time I go over even the slightest bump. It's not as bad in ORI and normal setting, but I still hear a loud thud even in normal setting if I go over a speed bump doing anything over 15mph.

It's pretty bad going off roading in a Jeep when it sounds like you are bottoming out over every single bump. Plus it does not feel very good. Sort of feels like I am running over a boulder whenever the thud occurs.

Brought mine to the dealer today to fix this issue as well as a very bad rattle/vibration coming from the rear spoiler/rear door area.

Will report back if suspension is fixed. Service writer told me it's normal for the suspension to sound like its bottoming out in ORI or ORII and to just slow down as I drove over bumps.

Bilstein, Innovation and High Quality Since 1873

Bilstein online catalogue now shows this shock to fit the JGC.

Re: Rearend or rear suspension clunk/creak

Sorry to revive an older post, but just wanted to update on my jeep.. 2014 JGC with 12k miles..

Had the clunking rear shocks and the left rear actually leaked its oil out.. took 9 weeks to get new ones (this was at 1500miles) without a loaner.. yeah chrysler!

Anyway.. new ones put in 3000 miles ago and are starting to clunk again, and these were with the updated mounts... just wanted to let people know that the problem still exists..

I am getting ready to trade in as i don't want to own this thing out of warranty.. no idea what to get though

Re: Rearend or rear suspension clunk/creak

You're not the only one. Clunk came back about 1,000 miles after they replaced some parts. At around 10,000 miles now and it's still annoying me. Strapped on time (work, school, kids) and dealer won't provide a loaner. Bummer.

A funny side note, I keep getting mail from Lemon Law attorneys regarding my Jeep. They somehow got lists of owners and are blanketing us with ads knowing that a good portion of JGC have issues, especially with transmission and suspension. Ah, to own a Jeep!

It's hard to find a comparable vehicle. I love the jeep......until I hate it. Clunk did come back but with less intensity, defrost blend doors fixed once, not working again, back up camera, recalls, and so on. Also, blew a 20 amp fuse for the trailer but can't find a replacement. Been to two different dealers they cannot source the fuse. One dealer was also a ford dealer and found a ford fuse to get me by but it's a 25 amp. The parts computer keeps pulling up the wrong part number. The other dealer ordered me the j-case fuse from my vin number just to find out it's too big and wouldn't fit anything in the fuse box anyways. That dealer, by the way, was also a dodge dealer and looked up the durango fuse part number, it was the same number of the wrong part. Looked under the hood of the durango and they use the same fuses as the jeep. I don't know what the hell to do.

Shelton I rarely come into this forum now. I had the same problems and I finally reached my limit and sold it. I had a 2011 Overland 5.7 wih every bell and whistle. by 40K, it had had 5 sets of shocks. Right before I traded it, it sounded like it was starting again. As much as I loved the rest of that Jeep, all I did when I was driving was listening for the clunk to come back. One day it hit me--they do not know how or just are not going to fix it. It is a shock problem but worse it is a shock mount design problem where it attaches to the body. They have known about this since the first model year. They have never fixed it. My guess is either they don't know how (which I doubt since once you look at it, it's not hard to figure out why it won't work) or more likely they would have to retool machinery on the assembly line, fix all the ones that are screwed up-namely all quadralift and take a big hit in reviews and ratings (they get by on ratings because usually it doesn't start until you 5 digit miles--though some on here have had it as early as 3K miles.) At any rate-not to be a downer but they are never going to get it fixed. So your choices are: If you want one that doesn't clunk, buy one without Quadralift, sell it and buy something else with no Chrysler logo near it, or just live with the insanity.

Watcher - you are spot on with your analysis. I'd also like to add that these issues are not limited to Quadralift as my JGC Altitude 4x4 doesn't have this option, but am still plagued with the rear clunk.

What kills me is I wrote--a real letter to corporate headquarters and a guy calls me back immediately. He starts implying its the dealer. A Chimp with a ratchet set could change shocks.

Hell I wrote FTSB as a safety issue--never got the courtesy of a reply. Guess if someone is not killed yet, they aren't going to do anything about it. Once again, pitiful inefficiency and a lack of of caring--or just plain stupidity shows why your vote is a waste. No matter who wins they hire their idiot buddies. and BTW Chrysler has big loan with the Feds

Exactly. If you have the patience to keep taking your car in to the dealer every time it happens, then you can start a Lemon Law case (at least in California). The issue would have to present itself at least 3/4 times with repair attempts. Other than that, trade it in (and probably take a huge loss) or sell it.

What vehicle did you get when you traded it in?

Interesting on the Lemon Chasers. Haven't gotten any. Wonder if they are somehow getting info on repair records rather than just blanket dmv or similar records.

Well...I went back to a Ford Excursion. I had one for 10 years which was rear wheel drive that never had an major issues. If something did happen, the dealer could fix it. I traded it in on a new Jeep Overland 5.7 Hemi in 2011 as I moved out to MT. I found one with 80K miles on it and am back playing again. These are niche vehicles where most people who buy them don't give a crap about gas mileage, just how many modifications you can make. It is what the Sierra Club called the "Ford Valdez". The SC-who drive tons of pick ups - actually pointing fingers while only their leadership can out do their hypocrisy

The 15 member board of directors and their households own a combined 32 vehicles with an average fuel economy of 27.4 miles per gallon (mpg), based on government fuel economy data. This is only half of the 54.5 mpg fuel economy that the Sierra Club has called for to become law.

Even more hypocritically, the board prefers sport utility vehicles to hybrids/electrics, with seven of the 32 vehicles part of the former vehicle type and only six of the latter. Perhaps most egregious is the fact that two vehicles are luxury Jaguars, averaging only 18 mpg, far below the U.S. average fuel economy of 24.8 mpg in 2013.

Among the worst offenders are:

The chart didn't paste but the 6 gas guzzling Jaguars and one unnamed SUV at 21 mpg.

Anyway, that's what I went back to for hobby and fun issues and away from hearing a 50K Jeep clunk through 5 sets of shocks.
