Re: Recall for Alternator

The battery display came on my EVIC this morning after driving about a mile. Short drive to work, drove back home for lunch and it came on again. Same thing when I got to work except when I got to work I smelled a burning electrical smell, I glanced at the grill and smoke was coming out! Nervous as hell... I thought it was going to burst into flames :|

Had it towed to the nearest dealer and won't be getting it back until tomorrow.

Re: Recall for Alternator

based on the model number on that Denso Alternator they are replacing it with another 160 amp alternator, would be interesting to know the part number on the one they removed.

But yeah the recalls are a bit obnoxious on all manufacturers the last couple years, including GM and other manufacturers also. Heck the 2015 Canyon/Colorado has already had recalls for seat frames, wiring harness, airbags and brake calipers.

Its too bad, but as our vehicles become more complicated and more features are added I am sure that the high number of recalls will continue for years to come.

Eibyer, that video is a bit scary, smoke in the engine bay never good. I wonder if anyone has had a full on fire because of the failure?

Re: Recall for Alternator

My replacement alternator also failed right after I picked up my GC yesterday. Had to get it towed back in after about 3 miles or so from the dealer. This morning I was told that the pcm gothe damaged as a result of the alternator failure. I'm not sure if the first or second failure is what took out the pcm. Anyways there are no parts available until Tuesday, for me anyway.

Re: Recall for Alternator

I don't clearly remember the recall text, but for some reason I thought they were putting 180s in.. didn't really pay a lot of attention 'cuz I have a 220

Oh, and, to the poster who put in a snide comment about how this is because of the pot-smoking workers at JNAP: No.

This is a supplier quality issue. Think Takata.

Re: Recall for Alternator

Actually the GC seems to be one of a very few vehicles really designed to tow a trailer.

Recently I upgraded the alternator in an 86 RV from a 94A to a CS-144 140A then was cosidered SOA. So the 160A seemed to be pleanty and has been. If it weren't, it is good to know that there is an easy bolt-in upgrade. Could also fit a hemi radiator, is just a bolt in, but on the road do not see over 203F coolant temp so no worries.

One of the topics on another group was the need to be able to monitor the transmission temperature & we can do that from the dash, no add-on needed (and have never seen over 190F even when towing for over an hour at 90+). Have wondered how the oil and traqns temps can always be less than the coolant though.

Will say that having a digital readout is lots better than a pointer but wish I knew how well calibrated they are (can check the coolant with an IR gun but oil and trans is more difficult).

Was surprised that the towing package did not include rear load levelling shocks. Even with a 460lb tongue weight it does not seem to need them. (Have a pair of AirLifts that have never been installed).

So even with the recalls (and some seem more focussed on the rust belt (brake booster) and poor previous repairs (visor wiring), my '12 is the best tow car I've ever had. Of course I have avoided many of the issues here by not having many options other than the trailer package. Think any replacement is going to need both direct injection and boost.

Re: Recall for Alternator

Eibyer,
That sucks your new one blew up that quickly, reminds me of a few years back on vacation with my 05 WK wound up having to replace alternator, battery and ecu, originally we thought it was just a bad battery but in the end it wound up being several pieces.
Hopefully they can fix everything that was damaged for you quickly and get back on the road.

Padgett,
You have me thoroughly confused as I dont think anyone in this thread has said anything about the JGC being a bad tow vehicle. I think more of the discussion was around with what packages do you get the alternator in question. Also one of the other questions was around what is the replacement alternator.

And yeah, this isnt Chryslers fault, it is an issue with an alternator run manufactured by someone else. I just hope no one goes up in flames because of this issue, engine fires are no joke.

Re: Recall for Alternator

Sorry, sometimes I tend to ramble a bit. Posted the label from the replacement alternator and the part number does cross to a 160A.

Comment about trailer was more that the most I've had before was a 140A CS-144 and the 160A is "enough".

ps does anyone know how to read the date code ?

No worries, I thought maybe I missed something earlier in the thread.

Yeah I remember back in the day when a 70A alternator was enough, but now with everything being electric
  • Electric Fan
  • Electric Power Steering
  • Heated Seats
  • Heated Mirrors
  • Heated Rear Glass
  • 500+ watt stereos with 8" touchscreens
  • Computer controlled everything else...

I dont know if anyone is using electric water pumps except on some race vehicles.

I can see why now the need is there for 160-180-220 Amp alternators, I assume they need to design the charging system for the worst case scenario meaning all loads on at the same time.
