Remote Start Issue - I think it is dangerous?

I read an earlier thread about concerns with accidentally triggering the remote start. I think the conclusion was that it would be very unlikely to happen inadvertently but children accessing the key could be a problem, etc.
I couldn't figure out how this could possibly happen since it seemed difficult to me to accidentally push the key fob twice in a row... until it happened to me. Walking into my building yesterday holding the key fob in one hand and my computer in my other hand along with my purse etc. Managed to do exactly this with the corner of my computer and did not realize I had started my car (way across the parking lot). Barely heard it start and was lucky that I went back to check. Sure enough, it was running. If I didn't hear it, it would have run for 8-9 hours. If it had been in my garage...major disaster.

I will be disabling this feature.

- Follow up - found earlier thread that said the car would have turned off after 15 minutes. I did not see this in the manual and would appreciate confirmation. If true, is this still a potential issue in a closed garage or are there safety turn-offs in place.

Yes it does shut-off after 15 minutes of running, that is the safety feature aspect of it. A vehicle running for 15 minutes in an air-tight confined space may pose a risk, but honestly how many people have air-tight garages?

Re: Remote Start Issue - I think it is dangerous?

Newer homes in the last 20 years are much more air tight. Hopefully 15 min won't kill you and that it turns off in 15 like it is supposed to.

Like you I was sceptical when I read these message also. Then it happened to me while I was on the floor working on some wiring in my office.

I think the key fob needs to be redesigned with some sort of positive lock slider that will disable the start button.

By the way, it does shut off in 15 minutes. From now on I am just more careful with the keys.

I have a snap apart key ring. When I come in the house the vehicle part goes on a hook with other vehicle keys.

Can you adjust the timing to 5 or 10 minutes. IMO you should not be idling that long esp with heated seats and steering wheel

Re: Remote Start Issue - I think it is dangerous?

Happened to me 2 weeks ago. One of the guys I work with says, "Frank do you know your Jeeps running in the parking lot?"

Im like WTF. Sure enough I must have accidentally hit the fob twice as I grappled my coffee, bag and keys.

Im still not 100% used to the keyless world. I still get out of my jeep and have to remember to hit the button off. (keep in mind I only drive the WK2 twice a week for the most part) I have a Chevy Cavalier as my commuter car.

mcomito,

I hope, when you read the previous thread, you also read the part that, even if you were standing IN the garage with it running for 15 minutes, the worst it could do to you would be a headache?

Re: Remote Start Issue - I think it is dangerous?

It seems, based on these posts, that a TSB should be created so the dealer's can instruct owners in the proper method of putting their keys in their pockets when their hands are full so they don't press buttons accidentally. I'm betting many think there should be cell phone recalls because they pocket dial too.... LOL

The seats and steering wheel have built in shut offs so there is no way to overheat them and damage anything.

Re: Remote Start Issue - I think it is dangerous?

If you think remote start is dangerous, you should probably sell your vehicles and buy a horse, or some new shoes, or a pedal bike, etc...

If you're worried about your children accidentally activating remote start, perhaps the keys should be put in a place where the children can't get to them?
