Removing Intake Manifold

So I am one of the lucky 3.6 owners that had the oil filter valve fail and I need to replace the oil filter/cooler assembly.

It requires pulling the entire intake assembly (upper and lower). I've been trying to get the upper half off but can't for the life of me figure out how to get to the back intake bolts or some of the connections behind the throttle body. Does anyone know have any hints on how to get to the intake bolts?

There's a firewall cover/pad that is really in the way but I can figure out how to remove with out damaging it. I've pulled the cowl out of the way but other than a bolt in each fender can't figure out how it's attached.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, can't help you with disassembly, but I have a suggestion.

Is it possible to remove the spring valve from the new assembly and replace the broken one without removing the entire cooler from the engine?

I thought I read something about that on another forum.

Re: Removing Intake Manifold

I did manage to get it done, but between researching, running to the dealer to get the dealer only part, etc., it took most of my weekend. Everything was just extremely tight by the firewall making it very challenging to get the throttle body connections and intake manifold mounts off and on. Thankfully I found some good info like this video:

It is for the Avenger, but the same motor. But it did show everything that needed to be done such as pulling both upper and lower intakes, etc. Huge PITA.

We have 2 other Jeeps, a 2000 WJ (280k) and 1995 XJ (160k) with 4.0s. Give me the terrible gas mileage and easy of maintenance/repair (not that it needs any) of the 4.0 over the 3.6 any day.

I searched around and everything I read said you need to change the entire $200+ oil cooler assembly. If you know different please let me know as I'm now terrified to change the oil filter in this thing knowing it may cost me $200+ and a day's work.

I've told my wife I want to get rid of the vehicle. We bought it used in 2014 and so far I am not impressed. Too much easily broken plastic parts. I still need to figure out what rattles in the door, why the lighting on the left steering wheel buttons flicker and repair a cup holder tab. Ugh. After this weekend I don't even want to look at it.

It is a 2011, BTW. I know, I should never have bought a first year vehicle...
