It worked fine with previous versions. It works fine with Android phones. It works fine with all kinds of other phones. It does not work with the iPhone 4 because Apple did not conform to the Bluetooth spec!
They revised it for their own purposes and the thing is incompatible with other Bluetooth gear as well.
Apple is under the impression that just telling others how to be compatible with them is the same as just making the device correctly in the first place. My guess is that the RER is incompatible because Harmon didn't feel like revising the programming in the unit just to provide compatibility with a single phone model when the head unit was on its way out the door anyway.
Remember- this is the same Apple who insisted they had no problems with the antenna and then ended up giving out free cases because of the intrinsic design flaw. This is the same Apple who announced a white iPhone but couldn't make it so it wouldn't crack. This is the same Apple who makes iPhones with a horrible service record (everybody I know with one has had to have it replaced at least once because of case cracking or some other issue).
Apple can make some good equipment. The iPhone is not good hardware- the software is impressive, the capabilities are impressive, but it is a poorly designed unreliable incompatible turd of a phone.
