Re: Road Trip Over 3 Hours in Heat

UPDATE: 2nd Dealership had it overnight and let me know today that the AC control module was shorting out. I think they just ran it until this happened. They are going to replace it next week when the part comes in. Hopefully this will fix the problem, although I won't know until I take another long road trip.

Re: Road Trip Over 3 Hours in Heat

I don't know if mine was the same problem:
coming home in Rome from a weekend in Austria, a 528 miles trip.
Here is a record hot summer: on highway I travelled with costant outside temp of 102 F.
No problems when I did the outward journey. During the round trip, after 200 miles, no cold air flowed from the vent. I heard the vent engine running at the maximum, but no air flow. I tried to shut down the A/C, commuting from auto to manual, without result. Setting manually the vent speed, cause the display bars varying correctly, the vent noise going louder or quiter, but still no air flow. The cabin become really hot, in the maeantime outside temp raised to 106F, and I was really worried for my two pets on rear seats. After 20 miles driveng in such a suffering situation, I drove in the first gas station and stopped the car, going out tho breathe (as far as you can breathe at 106F). After 5 minutes, I started the car and all went all right.
No more problems until home.
It seems like something "hunged" in the A/C control unit. This car is like a PC: if something hungs, just shutdown and power on again ?

Re: Road Trip Over 3 Hours in Heat

Go to another dealer.... if my 19 year old car can blow ice cold air for a 4 hour drive, your new car should be able to do the same. I have no idea how I would have responded if if a dealer told me something like that.

Re: Road Trip Over 3 Hours in Heat

Same issue with my 2011 Overland. Cabin started to get hot while on a road trip. I figured out that if I turned the AC off (push the AC button twice, - first push puts it in manual mode, second push shuts it off) for a couple of minutes it would blow cold air once again when auto mode was on again.

Took it to the dealer yesterday, they replaced a temp sensor and gave me as TSB which says to put it in recirculate mode when it happens again.

Doesn't sound like much of a fix. Quite disappointed.

Re: Road Trip Over 3 Hours in Heat

Just adding mine for the record:

I've got almost 12k on my Overland in 5 months and I've done a lot of driving lately in this crazy heat. Last week it was 104F driving back from Burlington and the AC worked great. This past weekend a trip to Pinehurst and again no problems. Today I was driving back from Charlotte, about 91F on the road and I noticed that there was a lot of heat coming off the windshield and dash. I put the climate control on "Auto" and that raised the fan speed but there was no air out of the vents. I cycled the air direction and there was no noticeable change. He guessed as I did that the fan door was somehow not opening.

I drove right to the dealer on my way home and dropped off the car, and the service manager duplicated the issue while I was there. He just called me and said that the mechanic could not duplicate the issue. He thinks that the evaporator coil froze up and thawed before he got to it, and that fixed the problem. He said that sometimes happens with high humidity but it wasn't any more humid today than it has been. He said that I should be using the recirculation mode but I never use that setting as I prefer fresh filtered air.

Re: Road Trip Over 3 Hours in Heat

I drove from Phoenix to L.A. two wees ago in temps as high as 118 and as low as 113. The AC was ice cold the entire trip. Take yours back to the dealer. Something is wrong and they need to fix it.

Re: Road Trip Over 3 Hours in Heat

Well it's obviously a lot drier out west. The issue apparently is humidity not necessarily heat.

Re: Road Trip Over 3 Hours in Heat

Still though. Its pretty humid here and I've never had a car thats had its A/C freeze up when its humid out. Recirc, no recirc...shouldn't matter.

Re: Road Trip Over 3 Hours in Heat

Just spent 4 hours coming home in bumper to bumper traffic (seriously, like 15 - 20 mph on I-95). Close to 90 degrees outside with High Humidity! 2011 Overland / Hemi cabin was ice-cold the entire time and the circulating / cooling seats worked like a charm! Get it checked!!
