Road Trip Over 3 Hours in Heat

My A/C quit blowing on a long road trip last week. Wouldn't blow at all until I turned it off for 30 minutes, although I could hear it. I guess it froze up. Took it to the dealer yesterday who said nothing was wrong and that they checked everything. I specifically asked if they checked the freon level and checked for leaks and the guy said they did but the sheet only said there were no error codes. I was told this is normal for car trips over two hours and the direction from Chrysler is to hit the recirculation button or to just turn off the A/C for awhile when this happens. BTW - I had the AC set to auto 73 degrees.

This doesn't sound right to me so I am taking it to another dealer tomorrow. I didn't just spend $45,000 to have to sit in the $%#$$ heat with the A/C off while it unfreezes or whatever. My Hyundai Santa Fe never did this and I went on many 9 hour + road trips.

Can anyone who has taken their JGC on a 3 hour or more road trip, in the heat, (say, over 85 degrees) please let me know if your A/C quit blowing during the trip?

If this really is normal and to be expected I suppose I can come to terms with it. But if this is the case, why isn't it in the owners manual?

Re: Road Trip Over 3 Hours in Heat

I've twice done over 6 hours in mixed 90 degree stop/go and highway, not sure how humid it was. AC was set to auto and 72 one side, 73 the other. Didn't notice an issue.

Just did 4-5 hours in 92 degrees heat and no issues. Set it on auto and 72 degrees.

Re: Road Trip Over 3 Hours in Heat

Sounds like low freon. Bet they didn't check even though they say it did.

LOL, thats the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

Was the fan blowing? I ask because mine wouldn't blow once after I started up until I stopped it and restarted, then it would run a while and quit again. Happened 3-4 times within 20 mins and then hasn't happened since.

That wasn't a trip either...

If you don't get anywhere with this dealer take it to another one.

I could hear something on the highest setting, but it didn't sound as loud as normal - nothing coming out of the vents but a trickle but that felt cool. I have no doubt that it is freezing up, but the question is, why?

I turned the A/C on and off a few times to no avail but didn't restart the jeep until it had been off a full 30 minutes. Then it was all fine.

Re: Road Trip Over 3 Hours in Heat

Sounds exactly like what happened to mine...

I don't think its a freeze up since mine happened right after startup. The fan would still blow, I think its an issue with the fan.

Re: Road Trip Over 3 Hours in Heat

Was the dealer's lips moving ?

I normally just leave my car's a/c on max/recirc from mid-June to mid-September & cannot get much more humid. Did have an a/c freeze up once but blew snow first and was in a '63 Avanti. Since cycling compressors were developed in the '70s, the compressor is designed to cycle off if the temperature or pressure get low (low charge) or too high (blocked inlet). If your evaporator is freezing something is rong.

Unfortunately while my 88 Buick can display high and low compressor line info, the heap doesn't.

Re: Road Trip Over 3 Hours in Heat

Took mine down to Atlanta a few weeks back, 4-5 hours in 85+ heat. Mine never stopped working, but if it decided it got the cabin cool enough it would tone the AC down. I don't think it ever stopped blowing air completely, just turned it to a low speed. The cabin stayed at the temperature we set it for though.

It doesn't sound like yours is working right. I would take it back to the dealer until they fix it or have to buy it back under Lemon Law. Alternatively, you may have to try another dealership to get one with people who actually want to fix your Jeep.

Re: Road Trip Over 3 Hours in Heat

you definitely have problems ,it could be low on freon ,but it sounds more like a bad low pressure switch .switch is d signed to turn off the compressor before the unit ices up
