Roof rack thread loose- I'm screwed! Help!

So I was putting on a roof rack and somehow incorrectly threaded the bolt going back in. It stuck in the recessed thread and the whole threaded piece came loose. Now I can't screw it back in because the thread spins too. Should I take to the dealer and possibly have a new one put in or does anyone have any options to let me tighten the bolt? Maybe some kind of adhesive for metal to metal etc. Heres a pic of the bad one and of a new one. Thanks!!!!ImageUploadedByJeepGarage1442521630.907093.jpgImageUploadedByJeepGarage1442521642.978641.jpg

Although you could probably fix this with really good superglue or even red loctite, I'd suggest asking the dealer if there is a better way, such as replacing that threaded insert. You are very likely not the first one to ding one...

Yeah I have an appt at the dealer next week hoping I can get lucky and have it covered under warranty...or at least not too much out of pocket. Wish there was a way I could do it myself.

if its cross threaded you are screwed, and will need a new nut insert, they are fitted much the same as a pop rivet. you could grind the top off push it into the roof lining and hope to christ it dont rattle around or remove the roof lining to find it. a new one takes all of two minutes to fit.

You might be able to fix it with a thread repair kit - I've used them on manifolds with higher torques. But, you're probably better off having the dealer look at it.

Re: Roof rack thread loose- I'm screwed! Help!

his issue is, now the whole nutsert turns so trying to retap it he needs to try and hold the outer edge with maybe vise grips or similar. if that works he would then need the tool to try and crimp it back to the panel.

Best bet would be to grind to the top off and push it down. Be careful grinding it as not only is there a risk of cutting into the paint the heat caused by the grinding can melt the paint.

Yeah I thought the same thing. That's actually how I got the bolt out the first time. Problem is when the roof rack goes on, I can't hold it with the vise anymore to turn the bolt. What tool could I use to crimp it back? I don't see how I could do that...

Figured I'd give an update. Took to dealer they wouldn't cover it. Went to their body shop and one wrong part and 125 bucks later I have a new nutsert installed. Sucks but at least it was done right.
