Re: Roof Rack - wind noise

An airfoil is nearly round at the leading edge, tapers quickly to its maximum thickness, then tapers gently to a near point. This gives the least air disturbance, which in this case translates to quiet. Reverse the shape and the air flow becomes rather messy, so that's why you're hearing noise.

Re: Roof Rack - wind noise

I bought MOPAR roof bars and like you have tried them in all positions. The ONLY solution to solve the unbelievable whirr wind noise is to take them off and leave them in the garage until you need them.

I just took a piece of foam pipe insulation on the front cross bar by splitting the tube and sliding it over the leading edge of the cross bar. I taped it with electric tape and took it up to 80 MPH with very little noise. I am waiting for others to reply to my post to see if there is another answer. Make sure the fatter edge is facing forward like an airplane wing. It make very little difference and repositioning the front bar 6 " back did not work. Maybe I will take at least the front bar off until needed. There must be an answer out there someplace . Paul P

Re: Roof Rack - wind noise

I only keep mine on when needed due to the noise of the crossbars on the highway.

Re: Roof Rack - wind noise

I have thule aero bars and they make noise all the time. I have tried different positions and solutions. It does stop when the windshield wipers are going. I leave them off until I need to use them.

Re: Roof Rack - wind noise

I found a way to reduce the wind noise almost completely. Tipped off by a random post on amazon when I was about to buy a wind deflector for my Yakima round bars.

Take a bungee cord and hook it to one upright of the front bar. Then wrap it around the front bar in a spiral and connect the other hook to the other upright. Do like 3-4 wraps around the bar before you hook it to the other side.

The wind noise at that point is hardly noticeable. My non-aero bars were very loud before I did this, I was amazed. I used a black bungee cord and hardly ever notice its up there. And I was able to connect my Thule snowboard rack to the bars without a problem.

I hacked my roof racks to make them quieter.
Used my power drill to roll kitchen plastic wrap to create a thin strand I could wiggle inside the cross bar and stop air flow through the cross bar as I speed down the road. Inserted the plastic wrap in a zig zag way from end to end

Drove it and I personally like the results. Is not silent but I went from not liking the noise to barely noticing or remembering I installed them.

Pic shows roof racks without plastic cover.
