That hurts my irony bone. On my 1993 Dodge Grand Caravan, the E-brake (drums!) sometimes rusts to the wheel if I drive a short distance and get it wet without letting it get hot. The mechanic told me to use the E-brake less frequently.

Yeah, disk brakes versus drum brakes, but explaining this to the other drivers in my family is going to take some doing.

Re: Rubbing or Moaning sound when braking

So after consistently using the e-brake the noise never went away after a month. So the jeep is back at the dealer. They so far, did the TSB on the gas tank???!!! and have not been able to locate the problem with the 5mph moan/grinding/vibration/rubbing noise. This is day 2 with the jeep out of commission.

Re: Rubbing or Moaning sound when braking

Jeep is staying in overnight, going on day 3 trying to get this repair done. I'm getting really frustrated. I did not spend 40+k on a new vehicle to be driving around in a base dodge ram loaner pick up!!! I should have stuck with the BMW.

Still no solution. Dealer had Jeep engineers on the phone trying to figure out what's going on.

Re: Rubbing or Moaning sound when braking

As I posted before I had the exact condition you describe with the noise at only 5 mph and it turned out to be in the tranfer case. I went through the same thing where they thought it was the brakes among other things. They got the engineers involved and replacing the tranfer case took care of it. I had a 3.6.with QTII.

Re: Rubbing or Moaning sound when braking

I told the technician about your post about the transfer case, but I'm not sure they have taken that route yet. If it's there over the weekend, the car is getting traded in, I'd rather have a used BMW 3 series than a rental car.

Mine spent a month in the shop with them trying to figure out the problem.

Re: Rubbing or Moaning sound when braking

Rubbing and moaning sound should only last 2 minutes, then give it a cigarette and go home!

Re: Rubbing or Moaning sound when braking

I guess you can count day 4, 5 and 6. The Jeep is there till at least Monday. They have had the Jeep engineers on the phone trying to diagnose the problem to no avail. That's where I am with this car. This is my 6th Jeep and probably my last. I'm tired of bringing them in for constant problems.

Re: Rubbing or Moaning sound when braking

Jeep467, you are correct, it's the transfer case. it's going to be at least another week until the parts come in for the car. Engineers haven't decided if it's a new transfer case or whether they are going to replace a part.

Re: Rubbing or Moaning sound when braking

Its good to hear they decided it was the transfer case. I knew from what you were decribing it was the exact same thing I had. In my case they replaced the whole transfer case.

Re: Rubbing or Moaning sound when braking

Thank's JP467. I did tell them about your situation, however it took them two trips to the dealer and several calls to the Jeep engineers and 6 days for them to get it diagnosed. I wish they would have listened to me the first time. I appreciate your help.
