Scraping Noise When Front Axle Articulates. Need Help Identifying.

Hello, everyone.

I just recently got a new 2014 JGC Laredo with the Tow and Off-Road Adv. Package I, but have some concerns with noises I'm hearing, coming from the front axle.

I first noticed it was when I was entering a parking garage (only a few drives into ownership, no off-roading as of yet) and started up the first ramp to get to the next level. When I make the turn and the front axle starts to articulate, I hear the scraping noise from the driver's side tire area. I didn't think much of it at the time, as I figured it could've been some stress put on the skid plate mounts or something. Now I hear this everytime I go into the garage if I go up the ramp without gingerly making the turn.

But last weekend, I went on some light off-road adventures and also noticed the same noise when I made similar approaches up inclines and the same noise was heard when the car struggled to get up these dirt slopes.

Anyone have a clue as to what the noise could be coming from? I never hear it while changing gears or reversing, as I've seen similar threads while searching for answers to my concern.

I'll take some video the next time I come into the parking garage at my workplace as well, if it would help the cause.

Re: Scraping Noise When Front Axle Articulates. Need Help Identifying.

I've also started hearing/feeling this grinding in the brake pedal when I back up sometimes and have my foot pushed down a bit.

Anyone please have any suggestions as to if I should take it in to have them look at it before I ruin something or what it could be coming from?

Thanks.

Take it to the dealer and have them check everything. Without actually crawling under your rig, theres really no way to know.

You're right...scheduled to take her in next week. Hopefully it's nothing major.

Thanks.

Re: Scraping Noise When Front Axle Articulates. Need Help Identifying.

After reading around a bit more on the forums, I think I may have found some info that's related to this sound and possible problem.

I read this thread: Impressed With The '14 GC 4x4, and realized that noise I'm hearing and feeling in the brakes sounds exactly like the ABS and Brake Lock Differential noise I heard when I did some light off-roading.

Still, I have only heard the noise in random situations a few times so far, but nothing that should be causing the ABS to act up.

Any ideas?

Re: Scraping Noise When Front Axle Articulates. Need Help Identifying.

Took the Jeep into the dealership today and had them take a look.

After a thourough explanation of what I was hearing/feeling and letting them put it up on the rack, they can't find anything wrong with it. Go figure?!

I've had pretty terrible luck with Jeep dealerships in the past not giving me sound feedback or service when I've had a problem. Hopefully this isn't more shi* stacked on the pile...

Re: Scraping Noise When Front Axle Articulates. Need Help Identifying.

I've still been experiencing this noise in certain situations when the front tires lose grip and I'm almost positive it's caused by the quadra-trac system. It happens when I'm turning hard right sometimes, going up steep and/or muddy/snow covered hills...

The noise only comes from the driver's side front tire, as mentioned before, and is similar to what a few other Jeep owners have experienced with quadra-trac problems/noises. ie: binding/popping noise with quadra trac

I can't find that much more info beyond people stating the problem, but not any solutions. Obviously I'll address it to the dealership again, but will they be able to resolve it some way or is this normal for the quadra-trac?

Re: Scraping Noise When Front Axle Articulates. Need Help Identifying.

Took a drive with a technician over the weekend and had them hear the noise.

Apparently all is working as it should and the sound is normal. It's the traction control fighting the slip in the front tires, as I had predicted.

Better safe than sorry I guess.

Re: Scraping Noise When Front Axle Articulates. Need Help Identifying.

A little better explanation on the chatter from the left front wheel, at least in my case:
My dealer said the traction control is actuated by a solenoid controlling a brake master cylinder pump which brakes and releases any wheel that is slipping like 20 times a second (or a lot anyway).
And that is up close to the left front firewall so sounds like it is coming from the left front wheel. My steering wheel blocks the TC lite so I never thought of that. I don't think we should hear it at all but at least I feel better!

Glad I wasn't the only one who was concerned enough to take it in.

Thanks for the reply.

I saw this post and decided mine might be different but sounds like the same "sound" LOL BUT I DO NOT think we should hear that bad sounding of a sound!

I agree.

And the "you're kind of a moron, of course it's normal" response from the technician kind of pissed me off, but whatever.
