I have heard buffing is actually bad for modern windshields.
Unless a crack, I wouldn't expect any of those do it yourself patch kits to be much help as they rely on being pumped into the crack to harden a bit.
Have you checked with any of those quickie windshield repair places to see if they could get the repair epoxy to stick into the crack to smooth it out enough it doesn't bother you? You MIGHT be able to do this yourself by mixing the stuff or using the sunlight cured stuff and a small stick--then you'd need the very smooth piece of
covering for the scratch for about an hour until it hardens.
? Polishing may thin the glass a bit, but as long as you stay away from any of the washer sensors, auto-headlight sensors, etc. it shouldn't hurt--but it does tend to
leave a somewhat wavy looking area that you may find bothersome. You'd want to ask a local glass repair expert what those results might look like.
A junk yard replacement is an option for budget repairs if your insurance wouldn't cover the "oops, a rock hit that scratch" option.
